1. What is BPA? How might you get exposed to BPA?
Bisphenol A, commonly known as BPA, is an industrial chemical that is extensively
used in the manufacture of plastic and resin items such as food and water containers (Vaughn,
2011). Canned foods may expose one to BPA. Since these foods take a long time in the
aluminum cans, they may have traces of BPA at the time of consumption especially if high
levels of BPA were used during the manufacture of the cans. Additionally, use of plastic
materials in storing of foods and water. In fact, some regions such as Canada and the
European Union have banned the use of the chemical in babies’ plastic bottles although they
continue to be used in other regions (Vaughn, 2011). When these materials containing BPA,
such as plastics, are exposed to heat especially when heating food in a microwave, the
chemicals easily leach into food.

Name and describe each of the four major types of environmental hazards.
There are four types of environmental hazards. The first one, chemical hazard,

involves environmental threats emanating from use or exposure to chemical substances. These
substances, for example, gases and farm chemicals may cause damage to the environment
through toxicity, and that may lead to other effects on living organisms such as health effects
(Gee & Payne-Sturges, 2004). The second hazard, physical hazard, involves environmental
factors that have the capability to cause harm to either with or without necessarily getting in
contact with them. They include noise, floods, and radiations, among others. There are also
the biological hazards, also known as biohazards, and that involve environmental factors that
can impact the health of an individual and mostly emanate from other living organisms. These

include molds, pathogens, and allergens, among others. The last type of environmental hazard
is the psychosocial hazards and includes the factors that have an effect on the mental health as
well as the personal well-being of an individual. They may include various stressors as well as
violence that affect the emotional performance of an individual (Gee & Payne-Sturges, 2004).
