Running head: ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY ON SUICIDE RATES AMONG TRANSGENDER ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY ON TRANSGENDER SUICIDE RATES OTO GORDON ARGOSY UNIVERSITY 5/24/17 1 ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY 2 Annotated Bibliography Haas, A. P., Eliason, M., Mays, V. M., Mathy, R. M., Cochran, S. D., D'Augelli, A. R., ... & Russell, S. T. (2010). Suicide and suicide risk in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender populations: review and recommendations. Journal of homosexuality, 58(1), 10-51. The article starts by remarking that despite the high rates of suicide among the LGBTs, approximated to be at 47%, and nine times the national average, there has been little research that has been done to come up with a conclusive position on the matter, especially the causative aspects. The article identifies that ‘rates of mood and anxiety disorders, key risk factors for suicidal behavior, were more strongly linked to gay, lesbian or bisexual identity than to sexual behavior or attraction, particularly in women.' It is just one of the arguments that are put forward on why there is a high suicide rate among this group. However, the article goes ahead to identify that one of the reasons as to why there lacks a statistical background is because, in the death records, there is no analysis of sexual orientation. So, some of the causes for high suicide rates are mental disorders, stigma and discrimination and an inclination to personal rejection and even institutional discrimination. The article makes important points, as it also relies on another form of research that had been developed. Although in itself it is not authoritative, it offers insight into areas that future research should focus on, especially on how to deal with rejection which seems to be the major driving factor. ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY 3 Virupaksha, H. G., Muralidhar, D., & Ramakrishna, J. (2016). Suicide and suicidal behavior among transgender persons. Indian journal of psychological medicine, 38(6), 505. The article starts by stating that it starts with understanding the source of data for the assertions from the article are from the internet, the manual searches and the government records on people who have been documented as transgender. The article identifies ‘Rejection and lack of support from the families and society, gender dysphoria associated with extreme stressful experiences, child sexual abuse, early discontinuation of schooling, forced marriages, lack of livelihood opportunities, sexual and financial exploitation by the partner and police and rowdies, and lack of legal measures for protection’ as the major factors that cause the transgender to be highly prone to suicide. As a matter of fact, more than 62% of this group are known to have been on uncertain terms with their family. It would be important to note that the article raises one of the major aspects that has not been scrutinized fully, the economic and educational background of the transgender group. The information that is given is reliable, but it is neither comprehensive nor authoritative in the proposition that it seeks to make. As a matter of fact, it raises questions to a question that has been intriguing, on how the transgender deaths can prevent, yet all the article raises are causations with little information on remedies. Glicksman, E. (2013). Transgender today. Monitor on Psychology, 44(4), 36. The major focus of the article is that it dwells mainly on the treatment of the transgender people. It would be worth to raise the question of whether transgender is an illness in the first place. The article mainly starts by showing the people who have been able to overcome the societal stigma of being branded as being transgender. There is an interesting point that the article makes ‘any transgender client who wants a medical intervention be ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY 4 assessed first by a mental health provider’ which raises the issue of stigmatization in the first place. It should be interesting to note that it would be worth to note that by seeking to interpret that there is a treatment plan that is being by the American Psychological Association, it only leads to an inference that the transgender is just seen as an illness. Which all the more raises the question of whether being sexually nonconforming is a mental problem or not. The article can be said to be one of the reasons that have been identified as being contributing to the high suicide rates among the transgender. Perhaps, it provides a scope that has not been addressed, the need to bring the medical fraternity to an agreement that transgender is not an illness. Barr, S. M., Budge, S. L., & Adelson, J. L. (2016). Transgender community belongingness as a mediator between the strength of transgender identity and well-being. Journal of counseling psychology, 63(1), 87. It is one of the articles that offers a framework on what should be done when dealing with the transgender. It is one of the few scholarly materials that have been emerging offering a remedy on what the transgender problem should be addressed by, a mediation that seeks to integrate these people into the society rather than making them feel isolated and unwanted in the society. In an article, Barr, 2013 observes that ‘helping transgender people understand that much of the psychological distress they feel is the result of this oppressive social context and minority stress can also be a beneficial route to take in therapy’ is one of the best ways to make them feel part of the society. As such, it would be imperative that the society needs to have an honest conversation, to understand whether there is a basis upon which this group is seen as being deviant, yet people each day talk of liberalism and free will as being their leading aspects. It would mean that by ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY 5 acceptance by the society, the people would be able to form an identity that is acceptable and recognized by the society. Perhaps, it is this belongingness, which is intrinsic in all human beings that make the transgender commit suicide when they cannot attain it. Marshall, A. (2016). Focus: Sex and Gender Health: Suicide Prevention Interventions for Sexual & Gender Minority Youth: An Unmet Need. The Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine, 89(2), 205. It is an article that addresses the very nature of the entire research topic. It refers to the lacking empirical research on how to deal with the whole group of LGBTs. It starts by observing that ‘while interventions aimed at addressing suicide risk factors for all youth are being implemented and many have proven effective in the general population, no evidencebased intervention currently exists to reduce suicide risk within [the LGBT] population‘. Perhaps, it is a statement that shows just how scholars have overlooked the whole debate of LGBTs by not doing enough research on why there have been so many suicide rates. It introduces a concept of phenomenology, of perception on how the human beings perceive and understand each other. Could there be a reason why scholars have not been able to come up with research because they perceive this group as an abstract, a group that they cannot form a basis to start researching on? It should be noted that while the article makes a case for why there has been negligence on this group, it does not offer insight on what should be done to develop more interest in this group. As such, it ends up by not exploring the area of research comprehensively that it sought to analyze in the first place.

Research Proposal on Transgender Suicide Rate
Abstract
The need for studying the transgender suicide rate is significant with the increased
number of LGBT and the reduced attention regarding research directed towards these
populations. This study, therefore, is designed to analyze the prevalence of suicidal behaviors
among the transgender individuals and the causes of these characters. Moreover, the study seeks
to explain the resulting factors among the transgender that causes an increase in the rate of
suicide. In recent years, there has been an increased advocacy for the rights of the LGBT
populations in different parts of the continent. The former president of US is one of the leaders
who championed for the change in policies so as to accommodate the various LGBT groups. The
increase in these trends indicates a decisive step towards the liberation of the transgender
individuals from the bondage of discrimination and oppression. However, the policy may not
yield fruits since he received opposition from different institutions and the majority of the
countries were not willing to embrace these changes. Hence, discrimination and rejection of the
transgender continue in the society which leads to increased suicide rate. The study will analyze
the factors that contribute to increased transgender suicide and the role of both the society and
the government in remedying this situation. The study will collect information from LGBT
groups in Castro Valley community in California using questionnaires. Also, the survey will
obtain information from Center of Excellence for Transgender Health. To ascertain the
credibility the research will adhere to the principles of research ethics.
