1 PROJECT I: OBSERVATION ESSAY Assignment Description: Option I: Choose a college or university in the D.C. area to visit. You’ll find below a list of possible institutions. Then select a space within that institution where you can observe “education in progress” – e.g., a library, a computer lab, a study area, a coffee shop or commons area where students gather to do schoolwork, etc. your goal is to observe students’ behavior and get a sense of how they behave in your particular educational setting. Possible institutions to visit: American University Catholic University Gallaudet University George Mason University Howard University NOVA The George Washington University Trinity Washington University University of the District of Columbia University of Maryland College Park Process: You will want to visit your place during hours when many students are present so that you can observe a large enough sample of people. Friday nights and Saturday mornings are probably not optimal times to observe education at work. You may first want to walk through the space, taking detailed notes on its physical qualities. Remember to use your senses. Take notes on its layout, any objects, what people do there, how they move through the space, and any other details that seem interesting, revealing, significant, or strange. Pay particularly close attention to the way the place is set up to serve an educational purpose and to the way people within the space are pursuing their education. Are they working on school-related projects? Writing papers? Studying for exams? In what subjects? Are they web-surfing or social networking? Multitasking? Do they discuss classes, assignments, or other education-related matters? What do they say?Develop your observation by analyzing the probable meaning(s) and function(s) associated with specific details of the place and the behavior of the individuals within it. Always explain the connections between evidence and interpretation. Do not use any of the following words (unless, of course, they’re in a direct quote): best, worst, great, terrible, awful, good, bad, should. These are all broad, value-charged terms, and the point of this essay is to help you develop your skills of 1) observation and 2) analysis and deduction. Length: 4+ pp, MLA style,12 font ,double spaced

George Washington University: Life in the Library
When choosing a place to visit, I wanted to pick a spot that would allow me to make the
most of my journey. While a quick trip to the Washington D. C. area might not seem too significant
to the people who are used to living in the area. For me, though, a trip to the capital city of the
United States is always an opportunity to take a step into a world of history. The city thrives on its
own, with the highest installment of government settled in the area, and perhaps it would be just
as attractive without the historical landmarks that are scattered around. But, walking into
Washington D. C. would not be, for me, as impactful without the history and culture that surrounds
it. When choosing a university to visit, my mind flew straight towards The George Washington
University.
The university is located so incredibly close to the biggest, most important government
buildings in the nation; buildings that have stood the test of centuries of success, change and defeat.
As I researched the school, I could not help but get more excited. Founded in 1821, the university
holds a history of its own. I was intrigued by the way I would react to the visit, to the idea of
attending a university that is so old and prestigious. I began to wonder, too, how other people might
react to finding themselves in such a place. Would others be as distracted by the monuments, as
they rise in the distance? Would everyone, instead, ignore them, only to mind what happens in
their lives? I could not imagine getting used to the wonder.

I thought about the best route to take to campus. Getting to Washington D. C. was not
really a problem, or, at least, it did not scare me as much. Navigating inside of the university was
a completely different story. When you access the website, you have the opportunity to go through
a virtual map of the entire campus. Honestly, it looks intimidating. The entire campus is huge,
almost like a small town of its own. There are apartment buildings, coffee shops and convenience
stores. Compared to the size of the capital, the area that the campus covers is not big, but when
you are inside, you cannot help but feel like if you are in a space bigger than the entire city. Worried
about really getting lost, even though I had a machine in my pocket that could give me my exact
location at any time I chose, I hesitantly made my way to a library. And I should say, deciding on
a library was not quite easy.
Universities the size of George Washington University tend to have more than one resource
center for their students; at times, these are specialized locations for certain disciplines or
specialties. This campus offered many interesting choices: Gelman Library, which is located in the
heart of Foggy Bottom Campus; Jacob Burns Law Library, in the Law complex; and Ross Hall
and Himmelfarb Library, next to the George Washington University Hospital. Thinking about
these places, I wondered about the different experiences that could be seen at each location. Each
one carried the opportunity to provide specific insight into the life of the university students, and
each had strategic sights to offer the wandering eye. But, out of all these places I could only,
realistically, go to one.
Out of all the options, the one that stood out the most was Gelman library and the reason
was its location. As mentioned earlier, this library is located almost at the very center of the campus.
Because the purpose of this assignment is to observe academic life, I figured it would benefit fro...
