II 10. Answer the following general questions concerning Safety Data Sheets: 1. What does it mean for a compound to be carcinogenic? 2. What is a flash point? 3. What does Oral-Rat LD so: 1580 mg/kg mean? 4. What does it mean for a compound to be toxic? 5. What does it mean for a compound to be corrosive? What does it mean for a compound to be a lachrymator? 6. 11. There are several reasons that you are asked to look up SDS information for the compounds with which you work. In addition to health and safety issues, the proper handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals can be gleaned from the SDS information. Look up the SDS for butyllithium solution (1.6 M in hexanes, product #186171) on the Sigma- Aldrich website to answer the following questions. a) Disposal of waste organic compounds is typically determined by whether the compound of interest is halogenated, non- halogenated, a liquid, a solid, an acid, or a base. A typical non-halogenated waste container might contain hexane or acetone (the compounds from questions 8 and 9, above), a bit of water, and other miscellaneous items. Question: would it be appropriate to dispose of excess butyllithium solution in the non-halogenated waste container? Why or why not? b) Typically, if you spill an organic compound, you would contain the spill and then wash with water (or soap and water). Is this appropriate for butyllithium solution? Why or why not? c) Typically, one could use a graduated cylinder, beaker, or Erlenmeyer flask to measure an organic chemical. Would this be appropriate for butyllithium solution? Why or why not? d) In the space below, write the SDS section for butyllithium as it should appear in your notebook (noting flammability, toxicity, specific hazards, and if it is carcinogenic). Be sure to include the reference.

Explanation & Answer

Hello,Attached please find the complete solution for all questions concerning this lab section. I have also included, as required, the reference :)Thanks again!Selenica

10) 1. A carcinogenic compound is any chemical that is known to cause cancer after repeat exposure.
2. The flash point is the temperature at which the gaseous form of a chemical combusts.
3. It is easier to understand when this is broken down piece by piece. “Oral-rat” indicates an oral
dose of some substance given to a rat population. “LD_50: 1580 mg/kg” is the amount in mg/kg of the
substance that killed half the test population of rats that were given the substance orally. When put
