Evaluating The Visual Elements of Art & Principles of Organization in Pablo Picasso's painting "Girl Before A Mirror."

For this third writing assignment, you will need to make sure you have read chapters 4 & 5 (pages 77 thru 139) of the 10th edition of the "Living With Art" textbook.

After reading chapters 4 and 5 of the "Living With Art" textbook, you should be able to carefully look at Pablo Picasso's oil painting "Girl Before A Mirror" (shown above) and evaluate how some of the Visual Elements of Art (such as: line, shape & mass, light, color, value, texture & pattern, space, time & motion) and the Principles of Organization (such as: unity & variety, balance, emphasis & subordination, scale & proportion, rhythm & repetition) are being used in the painting. Don't feel you have to address all of the Visual Elements of Art and Principles of Organization. You should be addressing at least three Visual Elements of Art and three Principles of Organization in your paper.

For this writing assignment, I would like you to look carefully at "Girl Before A Mirror" on pages 138 - 139 of the 10th edition"Living With Art" textbook and write a page and a half or longer paper evaluating how some of the Visual Elements of Art and Principles of Organization are used (employed) in the painting.

For example, if you addressed BALANCE, what type of balance is being used? Is it: symmetrical balance, or asymmetrical balance, or radial balance? How do you know which balance is used in the painting? If you addressed SHAPE in your paper, what types of shapes are used? Are they organic shapes or geometric shapes? What specific geometric shapes are used? If you addressed LINE, what types of Lines are used? Are they curvilinear lines, contour lines, diagonal lines, horizontal and vertical lines, etc? If you addressed COLOR, what specific color schemes are used? Is there Analogous Colors, or Primary Colors, or Tertiary colors, etc? If you were to address RHYTHM & REPETITION, what is being repeated in the painting to give the entire work a sense of rhythm and unity? These are the types of questions you should be addressing as you write your paper.

Also, in the first paragraph of your paper, you should have a "thesis statement" sentence which clearly tells me which specific Visual Elements of Art and Principles of Organization you will discuss in your paper. The following is an example of a thesis statement: "Pablo Picasso's painting "Girl Before A Mirror" employs a number of Visual Elements of Art and Principles of Organization, such as: Line, shape, color, texture, balance, unity and rhythm and repetition." A statement like this clearly tells me as the reader of your paper which specific Visual Elements of Art and Principles of Organization the writer will address in his/her paper.

In your writing, please do not spend the majority of the paper discussing the CONTENT (i.e. what the subject matter is in the artwork and how it is being communicated) of the painting. Focus entirely on the Visual Elements of Art and Principles of Organization. Please do not copy the information about this painting directly from your textbook. Put the information in your own words, and perhaps even find additional information about Picasso's "Girl Before A Mirror."

Please be mindful of spelling, grammar and complete sentence and paragraph structure. No double-spacing, and please only use 12 point type. You may provide a space between paragraphs, but please DO NOT space between sentences.

Teacher's comment: The paper is not quite a full page and a half or longer of writing here. The first paragraph addresses too many of the Visual Elements of Art and Principles of Organization together. Discuss them as separate paragraphs. For example, when addressing asymmetrical balance, devote an entire paragraph to just that one Principle. When discussing Shape, devote an entire paragraph to just discussing Shape, and be specific in how you discuss Shape. What specific shapes are used? (i.e. geometric shapes of ovals, circles, rectangles, etc). Can you address these issues, then resubmit for more points? Thank you.

0Rosalie Robertson Steve D. Stones ART 1010 May 27, 2017 Picasso's "Girl Before A Mirror." In the unique painting of “Girl Before A Mirror” by Pablo Picasso, he used several artistic Visual Elements of Art such as line, color, shape, texture and pattern. As far as the Principles of Organization he used balance, rhythm, scale and proportion. In his painting, he used the Visual Element of gesture line which captures the movement of the lady’s hand. Then he used tertiary color to contrast bright to dark look in the painting, from bright red, yellow, green into the other side of the mirror with some dark blue, gray, brown, dark orange, and the entire edge of the painting is seemed to have a trim of color black. He also used positive shape in the painting to shape the mirror and for the entire background. Texture and pattern are then used with in the painting for the girl’s body and even for diamond background for the entire painting. As for , first think I notice was the used of asymmetrical balance which shows the image of the girl and the similarity of the mirror’s image. The used of rhythm was also demonstrated in the painting as the girl’s image almost exactly repeated inside of the mirror’s reflection. Lastly, he also used the scale and proportion as it shows that the image of the girl is proportion and even the girl in the mirror was almost proportion to the girl outside of the mirror. The gesture line in the picture demonstrate the hands straight as it reaches directly to the mirror provides the audience a great sense of the artist point and the message of the painting regarding reflection. The color he used specifically the tertiary color, as the right side is bright color into the dark color of the left side and the mirror color. He uses a couple of different shades of color from the bright color to dark color somewhat emphasize the depressing mode of the art. From bright red, yellow, green into the other side of the mirror with some dark blue, gray, brown, dark orange, and the color black for the entire edge of the painting. Shape on the other hand were also used in the painting since the artist use the shape of a circle to form the shape of the girl and its diamond background that add more character into the painting as well as a shape of an oblong to form the mirror in the image. Other visual of elements of arts Picasso uses in his painting was texture and pattern. Texture and pattern because of the image of the girl on the painting is consistence through the mirror’s image. In the principle of organization, he uses asymmetrical balance since the painting of the girl outside the mirror is almost the same as far as the size and color the image of the girl inside the mirror. Rhythm was also used because of the reflection of the girl in the painting. Her reflection of her image into the mirror was almost repeated just different color into the other side of the painting. Finally, he uses the scale and proportion in his painting since the art was almost proportion on each side and the image inside of the mirror was almost proportion to the girl outside of the mirror. In conclusion, Picasso’s used of these Visual Elements of Art and Principles of Organization in the painting of “Girl Before A Mirror” allows him to provide his audience the main idea of his art work. The used of the following line, color, shape, texture and pattern, balance, rhythm, scale and proportion are a great way of telling a story regarding the painting without verbally saying what’s going on. To my opinion the artist was successful of communicating his message through his art.
