A. Extremophiles
In biological studies, extremophiles are defined as living organisms which have been found on
earth and have been found to thrive under extreme environments which were first believed to be
unable to support life as we know it. Some of these extreme environments can be extremely hot,
acidic, extreme pressure or extremely cold. The study of different organisms has shown that
these organisms employ different mechanisms to survive in these unforgiving conditions.
Organisms which thrive in extreme temperatures of between 50 – 800C are referred to as
thermophiles. Some organisms can even survive temperatures above 1200C. As part of their
adaptation, these organisms produce and utilize enzymes known as extremozymes which enable
them to survive in such harsh conditions. In defining extremity, we do this from a human
perspective.
One such organism that has been found to survive in such an unforgiving environment is
Thermus aquaticus. The orga...
