Triple Aim as it Relates to Health Leadership Strategy and Optimized Health System
Performance.
The IHI Triple Aim according to the Institute for Healthcare Improvement is a
framework that offers an approach that health care systems can use to optimize health system
performance. The framework is developed in pursuit of three simultaneous dimensions namely:
(1) improvement of patient care experience, i.e. satisfaction and quality, (2) improvement of
health among populations and (3) reduction of per capita cost within the industry (Berwick,
Nolan, & Whittington, 2008). The approach that will be undertaken to achieve the Triple Aim is
a systematic one. For the approach to be successful, all three levels of the Triple Aim should be
improved. The IHI has come up with a process that organizations can adopt, a change process.
First, the process requires identification of target population, define system measures and
objectives, establish portfolio of project that will be comprehensive and strong to influence the
organization level results and rapid testing to adapt to the needs and conditions of the population.
To achieve the provisions of the Triple Aim, the organization has to harness different community
determinants of health, empower populations and considerably enlarge the role and effect that
primary care and accompanying community based services Berwick, Nolan, & Whittington,
2008). The organization should ensure that there is a seamless transition through the entire
system of care in a patient’s life.
