Introduction
Work system is an organization concept which denotes the manner in which human participants,
machines, or a combination of the two perform various tasks and processes. It's composed of a
particular combination of work structures, HR practices, and activities that increase the employee
skills, knowledge, commitment, and flexibility. From a HR perspective, work system is viewed
as a set of management practices that are aimed at creating an environment where the employee
has immense involvement and responsibility. Designing a working system is simply bringing all
the HR pieces together (Parker, 2014). Designing a working system can be further be broken
down into identifying what jobs an organization needs to be done, designing the identified jobs,
identifying and attracting the appropriate workforce to fill the job
Designing of work system represents one of the most radical, yet common challenges
facing most of the organization from a HR perspective. The traditional work system stressed on
individualized jobs that were hierarchical and specialized, therefore hindering production. The
current work system is becoming more broadly defined and stressed. Designing a work system is
no longer solely based on technical measures, but consideration of strategic management choices
(Yang, 2015). Although the initial job design may be time-consuming, a well-designed work
system can provide the organization with the ability to quickly respond to environment changes.
Components of work system design
Work system design basically consists of the job design, work evaluation and measurement, and
establishment of the time-framework and compensation. The interesting fact is that other
decisions in other departments, apart from HR department can influence or even change the
