Once England decided to create an overseas empire, it did so with impressive speed.
Explain the motives behind English expansion to the North American continent, including
the Great Migration.
Europe had held a keen interest in finding land for expansion of its territories to expand
their trade networks in such commodities as sugar, spices, silk and many others. During these
developments, it also needed to seek new trade routes for importation and exportation of
products as well as avoid the market monopolies that existed. Another reason was that it wanted
to seek more land which as a result would lead to increase in power which was its measure by
then. In the North America, there were no rules and regulations that entirely governed the areas
within it and England saw this as a major advantage to their conquest. A major reason that led to
England’s settlement in North America was the religious torment and exploitation that the people
went through at that time. It was under this that they felt that they should seek a new faith under
cases of incompetence of the English church and felt that the church was failing terribly in its
reforms. This made the Puritans to leave England and opt for North America in a bid to seek
better reforms themselves. The people felt oppressed through the massive taxes which they were
obliged to pay, and after settling in North America they would exercise intensive agriculture than
they did in England, created jobs through exports and amassed a lot of wealth (Robert, 2016).
