Palm Beach State College Group Therapy Proposal Discussion
Make comment on your peers discussion1) Preparing a Group ProposalPopulation who may benefit from proposed group This group would be geared towards women who have survived domestic (DV) or intimate partner (IPV) violence. I would also want to include women may not have experienced violent acts of abuse, but have been through emotional abuse as well. Both types of abuse (violence or emotional) have severe repercussions and can both lead to post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This will also address survivors of sexual violence within intimate relationships. A report done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) projected that in a 12-month period, 201,394 women are raped and 1.3 million women are physically abused by a romantic partner (Sax, 2012). Because of this wide spread issue, there are many women out there who are in need of help to rehabilitate, heal, and forgive so they can move on with their lives. While individual therapy is a very important factor in this process, it has been proven women being able to share their stories and experiences with other women who understand their pain is necessary for their healing and extremely beneficial (Sax, 2012).Risk factorsSome of the risk factors involved with this population would be (TERM, 2016):Substance abuseMental health issuesSexual promiscuityLower socio-economic statusLower educational levelPast childhood trauma (direct or indirect)Past sexual assaultCounseling Group Therapy The type of group we would use is the counseling group. I believe this would be the most beneficial we will work on interpersonal skills and problem solving strategies to help the group transition from victim to survivor. This group would use supportive methods in the “here and now” to facilitate honest self-exploration (Corey, Corey, & Corey, 2017). This group would be a female only group that would be a closed group in order to build trust and relationships with other women who have experienced similar things in their life as the other women in the group. This group would provide a cognitive behavioral approach in order to promote client confidentiality, safety, coping skills and develop interpersonal relationships (Sax, 2012).This group will need to be on the smaller side, no more than 10-15 women which will keep it intimate enough to get to know each other on a personal level and facilitate that trust. The criteria for the group would be that they:Have already left their abuser for at least a monthAre living in a safe place such as a women’s shelter away from contact with their abuserAre a female who meets the criteria for PTSDWe will be using the brief group style within the counseling group as well so there would be a preset termination date. This group would meet twice a week for an hour and a half each for a total of 15 sessions. Some of the treatment techniques that would be used in group sessions would be:Thought stoppingRole playAutomatic thought recordsGroup members will be empowered by the psychoeducation materials they will receive about PTSD and the long term effects of DV or IPV (Sax, 2012). They will know what to expect and how to handle it when it happens. It gives the women a sense of power and control over their situation which builds confidence. Each member would leave the group with a discharge plan of action to continue their healing on their own.Measurable GoalsAll group members will complete a PTSD System Scale – Self Report (PSS-SR) that will evaluate the severity of their symptoms and how they improve throughout their sessions. The PSS-SR is a 17-item questionnaire that will measure: re-experiencing, arousal, and avoidance on a 0-3 Likert scale; 0 = not at all, 1 = once per week, 2 = 2-4 times per week, and 3 = 5 or more times per week (Sax & Treadwell, 2012). This will help us understand the severity of the symptoms in the beginning and how they have improved during and at the end of group therapy.discussion 2Hello Cohort A! My suggestion for a counseling group would be for children with incarcerated parents. I’d want to focus on protective factors such as mentoring, resilience, stigma management, and coping skills. Rationale & Risk Factors The children of incarcerated parents experience a plethora of consequences, such as economic disadvantage, changes in living arrangements, lack of ability to maintain a relationship with the incarcerated parent due to transportation issues or financial instability, and stigmatization due to their parents being incarcerated (Luther, 2015). Per Luther (2016), children that have incarcerated parents are often labeled and stigmatized as being dangerous and inheriting or repeating criminal behaviors. Moreover, children that have incarcerated parents are more prone to develop anti-social behaviors, physical aggression, or acting out behavior (Ashmitha & Annalakshmi, 2020). Thus, the goal of the group would be to reduce the risk factors by establishing social support, reduce stigma, and build resilience. I would want to focus on youth between 12-16 and use the group as a form of preventative care. Other topics that could be addressed in the group are school/home behaviors, self-esteem, and family dynamics. Group evaluation can be conducted via pre and post-surveys by youth and their caregivers. Also, identifying a resiliency scale self-report assessment to conduct after each session may be helpful to add to monitor the progress of the group. Additionally, the group could take place in a school or community setting for 12 weeks after school.
