Authors’ Claims
The author wanted to find out whether the development of an infant had any impact to
various factors such as the mental health of the parent, the relationship exciting between the
parents and the infant as well as the characteristics of the infant. Various researches over the
years show that the relationship between the mother and infant affects the language development
while the father and infant relationship affects the motor development of an infant. While
maternal postnatal traumatic stress in a parent negatively affects the cognitive development of a
child. Emphasis is made on the parents’ perception towards the infant as that is learnt to greatly
affect the characteristics of an infant. Therefore, negative internal parental perceptions are highly
observed to avoid negative child outcome.
Influence of factors on infant development
The author was interested to learn more about the internal and external variables that
affect the development of an infant from the womb to a point of conception as well as during the
development process from being an infant to a grown child. The developments being accessed
are the characteristics, cognitive and motor skills of an infant. They found various factors, either
from the parents’ relationship towards the infant, or the parents’ relationship towards one
another, or simply a parent’s perception towards their child to be the one affecting the full

development of the infant in one way or the other that ensured effective environment for the
children growing up. The social environmental factors in the life of the infants was; therefore,
important in determining the overall growth of the child especially their relationships with their
parents or the individual relationships between the parents. The physical and environmental
factors that influence the development of infants were not investigated in the study.
Historical significance of Infant development
Different factors from previous studies over the years conclude that parental mental
health like maternal postnatal depression affects the cognitive, emotional, behavioral, mental
health and language development of a child. The mental stability during pregnancy is very vital
for the child’s later outcome. Both the early and later characteristics of a child are affected by the
mental stability of a parent not forgetting a parent’s perception towards the child character also
affects the outcome. The relationship between the parent and infant directly affects the child’s
growth; further research also shows that a father’s positive involvement towards a child reduces
the cognitive delays in a child.

Infant development is also affected quite directly by the

relationship that excites between the parents. Infant development in r...
