Legal Case 1
Case Citation:

Maryland v. Pringle, 540 U.S. 366 (2003)

Parties:

Maryland (Petitioner) and Joseph Jermaine Pringle (Respondent)

Facts: It was around 3.16 am when a car was stopped for over speeding by a police officer and
when searched, money amounting to $763 was discovered in the glove compartment and cocaine
was found in the back seat. After interrogation, the passengers all denied the two items belonging
to either of them. The front passenger, Pringle, was sentenced for the possession of Cocaine and
the intention to distribute it. Pringle was condemned to a 10 years’ imprisonment deprived of any
option of parole
Procedural History: The Maryland court of special affirmed the ruling but Maryland court of
appeals reversed it and held that there was no evidence to show that Pringle was the owner of the
cocaine or even knew of its existence. Having found the Cocaine behind where he was seated
was not enough to convict him of possession. He was just a front seat passenger does not amount
to him being guilty or even a probable cause.
