ALICE WALKER: EVERYDAY USE She is a colored woman brought up in a farm whose life experiences have made her tough that she can be able to carry out even the duties that belonged to a man, for example, she once knocked a bull calf straight I the brain between the eyes with a sledge hammer. She never had a decent education as the school she went to was closed after second grade. She has two daughters, Dee and Maggie who had two opposite personalities. I do not trust the narrator. This is because she is presenting the events based on her own feelings and thoughts about her experience in life and her perception about how things are. For example, she refers to her yard being more comfortable than most people would know. She says it is not just a yard and that it’s like an extended living room. This shows how her thoughts are based only around what she knows and what she has seen in her life. The narrator sees her daughters as two very different people with different desires and approach to life. I agree with her. Dee is a courageous and determined young woman who goes after what she wants. She does not take no for an answer and even Maggie thinks she held life always in the palm of one hand, and that “no” is a word that the world never learned to say to her. Maggie on the other hand is a shy and relatively unambitious girl who, like her mother says, used to never winning or having anything reserved for her when said Dee could have their grandmother’s quilt. The narrator, her mother, describes her walking as like that of a lame animal; she walked with her chin on chest, eyes on the ground and feet in shuffle. This shows how gravely shy she was. The story would be based on the good things in life that Dee always wanted, a life away from the firm and all the hardships. It would be that of a condescending tone disregarding the kind of life her mother and sister were comfortable living in. She would have shown her appreciation of knowledge as opposed to how her mother thought it torturing and unnecessary of her feeding Maggie and herself with knowledge they did not need to know when she read to them. Mama is content with what life throws at her and she accepts her circumstances as fate, for instance, when she could not continue with her education when her school closed down and she even states firmly that she should not be asked why. Dee/Wangero wanted nice things and ‘she was determined to stare down any disaster in her effort’. She hated the life they lived and she was determined to go to school and make a better life for herself. These differences in their personal development led to Mama continue living in the same conditions as she has always lived ten years before while Dee went got out of that life and possessed the fine things in life. Mama’s decision to give the quilt to Maggie was since Dee had denied a quilt she offered her when she was going to college and told her they were old-fashioned and out of style. She also felt that Maggie ought to have something for herself too as Dee always seem to have everything she wanted. She knew Maggie would appreciate the quilt and put them into use. Walker defines heritage as something passed down through generations, such as traditions, value and property. Walker’s purpose is to entertain her readers through the story of Dee’s family. She focuses on addressing the issue of different personalities and ambitions that exist among members of a family. She strongly points out the conflict between upholding traditions and the need people have to want to break away from these limiting beliefs. The theme of “Everyday Use” is the importance of heritage in families and the understanding and appreciation of one’s roots. Dee was fascinated by the benches, the dasher and the quilt in her mother’s house and she wanted them. She tells her mother she does not understand her heritage when she was leaving after she denied her the quilt as they did not put them into good use.

I do not confide in the storyteller. This is on the grounds that she is displaying the occasions
