CONSEQUENTIALIST AND NON-CONSEQUENTIALIST ETHICS

2

There are several approaches to ethics that various scholars have designed in a bid to
explain value, character addition and behavioral attributes of different people in the community
or an organization. Un this paper, a consequentialist ethics approach and a non-consequentialist
approach to ethics is the center of discussion, but other theories relating to each ethical approach
will also be highlighted. It is important to know what ethics entails even before going into finer
details of the respective approaches involved. Ethics is defined as the perception of actions
towards individuals, groups or community either as right or wrong.
Differences between consequentialist approach to ethics and not- consequentialists ethics
The consequentialist theory of value stresses on judging good or bad based on the
consequences of an action tied to one party. It is importantly noted under this ethical concept that
the person involved tries hard to maximize the good deeds towards their neighbors or other
parties. An individual only does well for fear of punishment as a result of doing bad/evil. On the
other hand, non-consequentialists ethical approach weighs right or wrong based on the intrinsic
properties of an action and not on the consequences or the punishment dreaded therein. The
approach means that a person does well because the proponents of the theory believe that right
action is not the sole maximum threshold for measuring good, others could be used to not
looking so much into the consequences.
Teological argument relating to consequentialist ethics
It is imperative to explain that the teologians floated that the principal aim of an ethic is
to establish the goal of that particular standards (Kamm, 2007). It is common to say here that the
mean justifies the end. It is responsible and objective of particular people to know how they want
to establish an ethical conduct. The term, in this case, could be associated with happiness. That if

we obey rules and regulations the consequences of disobedience will not be felt thus a happy
ending. The objection to this theory comes in whereby, other ethical proponents associate the
means as justifying the end. All rules and regulations associated with ethics could be followed,
but this does not automatically translate to happiness. One may work with happiness backward to
attain their goal of following guidelines put in place.
Libertarianism theory associated with non-consequentialist ethics
That person should be free to do as they wish as long as their actions do not infringe on
other people's rights, privileges, and duties. Also, respect to the action of others is crucial.
Liberals, especially in the organization, adopt a laser's fire type of leadership. Here one is free to
act as they wish not fearing the repercussions of their actions but standing boldly to various
managerial decisions. It is, however, a dangerous approach in that, acting in the absence of
guidelines could be dire. An individual could move knowing very well that what he/she is doing
is wrong but still proceed thus cost the organization a fortune (Tomaselli, 2009).

examined. Both have an impact on the deceased action and the dependents opinion with regards
to the ending of the life of their loved one. It is radical to examine factors such as the suitability
of the life support machine to akin when deciding on their life here. The doctor sometimes has no
choice but to ensure that the patient dies peacefully and end their enduring troubles.

suicide given that fact that the former involves the patient's input through the aid of the physician
tasked while the lat...
