The Leadership Style of Recent British Prime Ministers

BRITISH PRIME MINISTERS

The purpose of the present paper is to review the leadership styles of recent British prime
ministers, starting in 1979 with Margaret Thatcher and ending in the present with Theresa May.
As shown, recent British prime ministers have had to combine different leadership styles in order
to handle the internal and external situations of an increasingly complex society.
Margaret Thatcher is arguably the most well-known British prime minister of the 20th
century. She won her first electoral victory in 1979, which represented the start of an era of
political conservatism compared to the previous decade combined with an increased number of
pro-laissez-fair economic policies. Thatcher represented a new form of conservative which
contrasted with the Tories. She advocated for an end to what she considered excessive
government interference in the economy and promoted the privatization of state-own enterprises.
Her social policies included moral absolutism and nationalism (Bennister, Hart 7 Worthy, 2017,
p. 110). While Thatcher’s conservative values affected British politics during the ‘80s, her only
remaining legacy in economics. Thatcher successfully eliminated many governmental
regulations and privatize many state-owned industries such as radio electricity, water, and the
state airline (Bennister, Hart 7 Worthy, 2017, p. 112).
While Margaret Thatcher was a conservative, her leadership style can be regarded as
innovative. Indeed, her reforms may have been perceived by many as a reversal to some extent,
but her approach marked the beginning of contemporary British conservatism and her reforms
significantly changed the British economic structure, making it more market-friendly compared
to most countries from the continental Europe (Roberts, 2017). Whether the changes she brought
were mostly positive or negative, her legacy remained strong compared to the legacy left by most
other prime-minister that followed her.
