Grandmother Ella has had cancer for years now and has followed alternative remedies from the time she was first diagnosed. Ella had a period of remission; however, the cancer returned and has metastasized to her bones, liver, and lungs. She is in the hospital after collapsing from weakness. She is being released from the hospital as she wishes to spend her last days and months at home. Ella has her preferences for care, though she is now so weak that she has given up in many ways. The family members are each experiencing their own fears and are grieving as they face the loss that will occur when Ella’s life ends. Ella feels stressed by the discord and discomfort of family members.
For this assignment, you are required to use the outline form with subtopic headers from the Week 3 assignment. Address the following items in your work:
- Synthesize the current research that is relevant to this scenario. Discuss the current practices for end of life and palliative care from the Western Medicine as well as the Complementary and Alternative Medicine perspectives.

Current Research
Modern cancer care can be aimed at slowing, stopping and eliminating cancer, or can
aim at relieving a patient of the pain, symptoms and side effects. In cases where the growth
and spreading cannot be controlled, or where the patient and family choose not to continue
slowing its growth, the condition becomes advanced or terminal and the main focus is usually
managing the symptoms. This is known as palliative or support care. Research has shown that
at this point, cancer slowing or stopping treatments are unlikely to improve the patient’s life,
and can decrease the length of care, or prevent the patient from getting hospice care which is
necessary at this point. Hospice care is usually a form of palliative care which is given to
patients towards the end of life. Palliative care is a key practice because patients with
disseminated cancer have special end of life care needs, which are predictable and this makes
it easy to plan for proper care. Palliative care has been proven by research to be a key part of
transitioning from cancer curative treatment, to end of life care (Albert Embankment, 2015).
It helps the patient and their family to prepare for the body changes which can occur near end
of life, and symptom management is addressed.
Palliative care can also help the patient and family members cope with the emotions
and thoughts which arise during end of life care. Issues relating to reflections on legacy,
leaving loved ones behind, or grief due to having to let go of a loved one always arise. Cancer
patients receiving end of life care also require medicines and other alternative therapies so as
to control pain and symptoms such as nausea, constipation and shortness of breath. Herbal,
Psychological, spiritual and hospice programs can also be integrated with medication to come
up with an end of life care plan for Ella. Other complementary and alternative medication
includes stimulating the skin using hot-cold treatment, exercise, acupuncture, massage and
hydrotherapy. These alternative approaches have been proven to be effective in managing
inflammation, tissue damage, and function loss. Hospices have staffs who are experts in

controlling pain and in providing emotional support to patients and family members during
the last days of the patient’s life. Hospices focus on caring and curing the disease, and are
recommended when the patient’s life expectancy is 6 months or less.
