Example for Outline:

GENERAL PURPOSE. To inform, to persuade, and to entertain.

SPECIFIC PURPOSE STATEMENT. A clear statement indicating what your audience should be able to do after hearing your speech. Focus on audience behavior: BEHAVIORAL OBJECTIVE

The following guidelines will help you prepare your Specific Purpose:

  • Use words that refer to observable or/and measurable behavior

Not observable: At the end of my speech, the audience will know things about Hannibal, Missouri.

Observable: At the end of my speech, the audience will be able to list five points of interest in the town of Hannibal, Missouri.

  • Limit the specific purpose to a single idea. If your statement of purpose has more than one idea, you will have trouble covering the extra ideas in your speech.

Two ideas: At the end of my speech, the audience will be able to write a single computer program in Just BASIC and play the video game Bioshock Infinite.

One idea: At the end of my speech, the audience will be able to write a single computer program in Just BASIC.

Formulating the Specific Purpose:

    • Use – “At the end of my speech, the audience will …”
    • Add a behavior verb - “list, explain, describe, write …”

Does the statement of purpose meet these three tests?

  1. Does it use words that refer to observable or measurable behavior? (page 119)
  2. Is the purpose written as a single idea?
  3. Does the purpose meet the needs, interests, expectations, and level or knowledge of the audience?
  • Use your specific purpose to focus rest of research.

CENTRAL IDEA/THESIS states in one sentence what the speech is about. It focuses on the content of the speech. Summarizes the speech in one sentence.

    • Suggestion – start sentence with the topic and make a claim about the topic.

The central idea should be a complete declarative sentence- not a phrase or clause, and not a question, but a grammatically, complete sentence. Uses direct, specific language.

Example:

Phrase: Car maintenance

Question: Is regular car maintenance important?

Complete declarative sentence: Maintaining your car regularly can ensure that it provides reliable transportation.

After formulating central idea, test it against these guidelines:

• Is the central idea a declarative statement?

• Is the central idea a complete sentence?

• Does the central idea use specific language?

• Is the central idea a single idea?

• Does the central idea reflect a consideration of the audience? The occasion? The speaker?

MAIN IDEAS/MAJOR IDEAS--> Use the following questions:

  • Does the central idea have logical divisions?
  • Are there reasons why the central idea is true?
  • Can steps or a chronological progression support the central idea?

GATHER SUPPORTING MATERIAL

A. With your main idea or ideas in mind, your next job is to gather material to support these ideas—facts, examples, definitions, and quotations from others that illustrate, amplify, clarify, provide evidence, or tell a story.

B. Supporting material should be personal and concrete, and it should appeal to your listeners’ senses.

SUBPOINTS. They provide supporting material to your main/major points.

Here is where you can do your oral citations of your supporting material for these points.

Running Head: BEAUTY STANDARD

Beauty Standard

BEAUTY STANDARD
Is It Wrong to Promote Beauty Standard?
“Who here watches television? I do watch television, and my observation is there is
likely to be at least one beauty related commercial especially during the prime time hours. We
live in an era where there is the obsession with our bodies and our looks. The media is
responsible for creating ideas and promoting beauty standards. In the modern world pursuing
beauty has become a full-time activity especially by the females. Different individuals have
diverse views on whether it is right or wrong to promote certain beauty standards. We mostly
watch television for entertainment and this reason. There is even a higher chance to view a
beauty commercial or endorsement of a beauty product. As you are in the middle of your favorite
show, you see an advertisement done by your show star or favorite celebrity.

Imagine you see a weight loss commercial with a bunch of skinny beauties and buffed up
gentlemen, that’s when it dawns to that you need to do something to your body. You start feeling
guilty about your appearance. But just take a few seconds and look around the people in this
audience. Do they look alike? I doubt if t...
