The Problem Statement: Overfill has been a serious problem with Michigan city waste facilities for the last decade. By some estimations, our city dumps are, on average, 40% above capacity—an unsanitary, unsafe, and unwise position for our city to be in. Several methods have been proposed in order to combat this. Perhaps the most popular of these is the simplest: building two new landfills on the county outskirts. Others have proposed stronger recycling campaigns and larger per-bag waste disposal costs as a way to lessen the potential damage of our trash situation. Michigan is close to drowning in trash. Action is needed if our city is to remain the clean, safe place to live it has always been. Problem Overfill has been a serious problem for Michigan City waste facilities for the last decade. By some estimates, our city dumps are, on average, 40% above capacity—an unsanitary, unsafe, and unwise position for our city to be in. Due to the slow decomposition rate, it can take years for the waste to decompose. Solution I. II. Build two new landfills on the county outskirts. Have stronger recycling campaigns and larger per-bag waste disposal costs as a way to lessen the potential damage of our trash situation. III. Reduce waste IV. Reuse products MICHAGAN CITY LANDFILL 4 Conclusion We can reduce our consumption by purchasing those things that we really need and weaning ourselves off those things that we don’t, saving money and our environment. We can buy better quality products so the items will last longer. We can reuse what we have by selling or buying used items, buying from second-hand stores, yard sales, internet sales sites (Craigslist, E-bay, etc.). We can avoid items with excessive packaging. What we use in our households, commercial entities and even industries should be products that are safer and more biodegradable, such that trash ends up being less toxic and more biodegradable. If products are made of more biodegradable material, they will disintegrate faster if thrown away and thus take up less space in the landfill. Perhaps building two more landfills on the county outskirts will also help with the landfill being overfill and make the city healthier and safier like they use to be.
