Introduction to Ethics (Module 1)
Question 1

Differentiate between Ethics and Morals?

While ethics and morals are used interchangeably by both scholars and in the society, the two
means different things and shouldn’t be confused. One thing in common between the two is that
they both refer to the right and wrong behavior. The big difference, however, between the two is
that while ethics refer to conducts, rules, and regulations provided by the society, culture, or
organization, morals refers to the individual interpretation of right and wrong. In this context,
ethics refer to a guiding principle as defined by an external source such as a business
organization which defines something as right or wrong. Ethics may also be deliberated as a
social structure or frame for proper behavior. Morals, on the other hand, refer to the individual
internal interpretation of something to be right or wrong. In defining something to be right or
wrong, ethics follows the definition of the society or the entity which gives the code of conduct.
As far as ethics are concerned, we do something because the society defines it as good while we
avoid doing others because the society interprets them as wrong. On the other hand, when
judging something to be right or wrong, moral follows the definition of the particular individual.
In morals, we do something because we feel it’s the right thing to do while we avoid doing
others because we define them as wrong. Ethics defer from one organization to another,
especially in business. For instance, the ethical code followed by doctors can be seen to be very
different from that demanded of police officers. At some point in our lives, situations could
happen which would demand we violate our morals integrity to act within the stipulated ethical
practice. In an example of a lawyer whose moral integrity views stealing to be wrong, ethical
code demands that they ought to represent the said thief and defend them in a court of law. While

morals are derived from the society and culture, they are considered to be personal principles
created and upheld by that individual.
Question 2

Why do we need business ethics in our day to day business practices?

As a guide on how businesses and employees carry themselves within the area of operation,
ethics play a critical role on how businesses are run and how they interact with the immediate
community.
One of the most important roles of ethics in business is to create credibility. When business
practices and actions are based on the sound ethical code, customers and investors will view the
business as credible and will be confident with its operations. This will in the long run help in
attracting and retaining customers who are confident about the business and the activities it
engages in.
Running a business which is based on strong ethical practices help create unity and stability of
the organization. This is because ethical behavior promotes fairness and harmonious existence
alleviating conflicts between employees and between employees and management.
When companies are run by strong ethical consideration, decision making becomes easier. This
is attributed to the fact the choices taken it the course of the business acti...
