Description
Humanistic psychology emphasizes the importance of the individual experience in the understanding of human behavior. Which theorists do you believe were most instrumental in establishing this tenet of the movement? Why?
I believe one of the most instrumental theorists in establishing a tenet to create the humanistic psychology movement would be the works of Maslow. His work with understanding both the basic needs and more advanced needs in individuals has helped to really look at the full person and not just certain parts.
This continues to shape the idea of how individuals can become successful and what factors contribute to this success (Freitas and Leonard 2011). Which in turn can create a better understanding of a person as a whole, their motivations and desires.
Coming from a teaching point of view, this is extremely helpful in the classroom environment because when teachers are able to understand the needs that children must have met, we can get them to better prepare for working in the classroom. When I was teaching in a high school gang intervention program class I would always have drinks and snacks available in the back of the classroom. I learned very quickly that when the kids were hungry or thirsty they were not able to perform to the level that I needed them to in order to achieve what needed to be done.
