English 124 Definition Essay 2 Prompt For your second paper you will be required to write an essay at least five pages long building an argument around a specific definition. Choose a topic and find a definition that is key to that topic. You can either argue how a definition should be changed from its common understanding, in light of the evidence you present in your essay. You can argue why a definition should stay the same based on your evidence. You can argue why an old definition should be cast out, and a new definition should replace it based on your evidence. What definitions we believe and accept help shape how we view the world and analyze evidence. Consider how you can use a definition to help make your case on how we should think about that topic. Recent definitions that are being debated in society are how we define marriage, life and death, religious freedom, among other topics that help shape and influence our lives. Your essay needs to be clear and unified under your thesis. Make sure to include specific evidence from the article you read, to show how and why you analyzed the article the way you did in your essay. Make sure to review the section in your textbook on proper MLA citation for any quotes or paraphrases you use from your outside source. Grading Criteria Successful papers will have: 1. A developed introductory paragraph, with a clear thesis. Are you arguing to preserve a definition, update a definition, or replace an established definition? (25 points) 2. Well-supported, unified body paragraphs with specific examples that reinforce your thesis. Must tie into the definition at heart of your argument. Include your original thoughts about how your evidence supports your thesis. (25 points) 3. Smoothly integrated quotes from at least one or more outside source. (25 points) 4. A conclusion that summarizes your main point, and offers a final thought about the value of your argument. (20 points) 5. Your paper will also be thoroughly edited for sentence-level errors. The Institution of Marriage

From a broader theological perspective, the institution of marriage has involved wider
definitions. These definitions of marriage continue to be highly controversial with time rendering
no specific resolution by dictionaries that tend to provide varied answers. The controversy
continues to revolve around religious beliefs, cultural traditions, legal rulings as well as ideas
based on basic human rights and fairness. However, despite different cultures having various
definitions of marriage, the principal point of dispute solely revolves around marriage between
two people of either the same sex or gay marriage. Therefore, marriage, by itself refers to the
intimate union as well as the equal partnership between spouses. (J. T. Shawcross)

Marriage being an institution is a sacred union-based obligation when entered. From the
biblical book of Genesis chapters 1 and 2, God, who created man and woman in his image and
likeness ordained that they should marry and become one body. Therefore, from the biblical
perspective, it even renders a stronger definition of marriage to being a ritually or socially
recognized union between a man and a woman which establishes rights and responsibilities
between them, their would-be children and their in-laws. Consequently, with the current wave of
behavior in the modern society, the definition of marriage can be changed from its theological
understanding to a more accommodative and orderly manner. In this paper, therefore, seeks to

provide a more concise definition of the institution of marriage, its recognition in the modern
society as well as its impact on the future generations.

Marriage as a Religiously Recognized Union

Ideally, individual marry for very many reasons. While some marry because of social
reasons, others may marry due to legal, emotional, libidinal, financial, religious or even spiritual
purposes. However, marriage as a religiously recognized union is the most acknowledged
purpose for most couples. The definition of marriage as a religious recognized union comes from
the hand of God during the creation of man. When God created a man and woman, he did so in
his image so that they can spiritually be tied to Him. Though a man and a woman were created as
God's equal children, they possess different but important gifts. However, being rooted in the
divine plan of creation, marriage is not only a natural institution but also a sacred union. In this
regard, the clear and concise definition of marriage from a religious perspective must take into
consideration the sacred nature as well as its theological meaning. (Faith-Catholic Beliefs)

Consequentially, the Catholic Church teaching on the sacrament of a valid marriage
between baptized Christians is a symbolic love for Christ. This is the reason as to why in a
sacramental marriage, spouses make a free consent that is in the form of a contract. The entered
contract is sometimes referred to as a covenant that is established and strengthened by God's
love. Therefore, the free consent of the man and a woman in a matrimonial union makes a
marriage. Also, the marriage institution is established on the sexual consumption as well as the
free consent which creates a bond between a man and a woman. The marriage bonds were
therefore established by God who is the creator. In this regard, the religious union that breeds
marriage among Christians calls them to a life of holiness.

Furthermore, the institution of marriage is based on a mutual love between couples. The
serenity and openness between couples are powerfully expressed in the sexual union. Besides the
