CRJ Discussion One Responses:
Provide a detailed assessment of your program of study, correlated to the six learning outcomes in the
Social and Criminal Justice program. Explain, in two to three sentences (at minimum) for each outcome,
how your course of study developed your skills in accomplishing each of these program learning
outcomes:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Analyze criminal justice issues within the systems of law enforcement, the judiciary, and
corrections.
Evaluate the application of the social justice principles of equality, solidarity, and human rights
toward building a just society.
Apply knowledge of cultural sensitivity and diversity awareness to social and criminal justice.
Deconstruct the relationship between law enforcement, the judiciary, and corrections.
Interpret the relationship between social justice and criminal justice.
Develop critical perspectives in the study of social and criminal justice by drawing on the fields of
criminology, law, philosophy, psychology, science, and sociology.
What I need from Tutor: Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts, by Day 7, by critically
comparing the similarities and differences between how your skills and your classmates’ skills have
developed over the course of the program. Add any additional points that may encourage further
consideration.

Analyze criminal justice issues within the systems of law enforcement, the judiciary, and
corrections.
Although law enforcement has some authority they still have to respect everyone’s constitutional
rights. The Bill of Rights ensures that this code of conduct is upheld and enforced so that no one is
treated unfair.
Evaluate the application of the social justice principles of equality, solidarity, and human
rights toward building a just society.
In my career I have to make sure that I provide everyone I come in contact with each of these
social principals. Equal rights for all must be promoted so that no matter a person’s race, sexual
orientation, religion, disability, income, etc. they are given the same opportunities and treated
equally. A person must feel some form of solidarity and feel like an extended family member to
become valuable members of society. The final building block of the system is human rights. A
person’s must be respected and their “human rights must be provided to all members of that
society” (Robinson & Landrum, 2013).
Apply knowledge of cultural sensitivity and diversity awareness to social and criminal
justice.
We have an increasing number of the Hispanic culture moving into the area that I work in. I have
had to familiarize myself with their culture to make sure I am treating them fair and not just taking
something that someone does as being disrespectful. Sometimes it is just a cultural difference.
Having knowledge of other cultures just improves our society. I have taken some classes in
Spanish to improve my communication skills with individuals from the Hispanic culture.
Deconstruct the relationship between law enforcement, the judiciary, and corrections.
All three systems foundations are upheld by the Bill of Rights and the U.S. Constitution. Each
system relies on the other system at some point.
Interpret the relationship between social justice and criminal justice.
The social justice and criminal justice system both strive for equality among all. As a law
enforcement officer it is my responsibility to show the community that I work in that I am fair to
everyone no matter where they come from or what they have done. I must enforce the law, but
while doing so make sure that I am observed doing this equally and legally to all and then society
will see officers in a positive way in my community.
Develop critical perspectives in the study of social and criminal justice by drawing on the
fields of criminology, law, philosophy, psychology, science, and sociology.
Each of these fields of study must uphold the citizen’s constitutional rights. At some point people in
these fields of study will come in contact with one another. Working together for the same outcome
will benefit each criminal justice major. We must also have an understanding for what each field
goes through.

When analyzing criminal justice within the system of law enforcement; I feel that an improvement would
be more loyal and dedicated officers that have empathy for the addicts within many districts and
communities. By this, I mean that it takes police official and the communities to band and bond together in
producing change. When providing community faith based programs; I would like to introduce SAMHSA
(2014) for instance, this program is partnered with states, territories, countries and localities that support
and improve state-community based behavioral health services and systems.
The "Overview," points out that the Individual State laws define and dictate which services are available.
SAMHSA grants to states funds that provide provisions that aid the substance abuse prevention and
treatment care and needs of the addicted. The overall purpose is to allow state and local governments the
establishment through statewide policies and issue rules and regulations that govern the delivery of
behavioral health services in accordance with federal and other state laws and regulations (SAMHSA,
2014).
SAMHSA and other programs are used in building a just society by reducing crime. When alerting all
people of their rights by law is another way of revealing an honest based relationship because setting the
example to awareness of cultural sensitivity and understanding diversity held within a social and criminal
justice system is a boost toward crime reductions. It is a duty of the law enforcement to work toward the
best interest of the community and its people by observance and fact finding reports in order for the
judiciary system to be fair in sentencing. In the corrections field there should be production within the
criminology solutions that focus on psychology and sociology connections linked by philosophy and
theory in evaluation the state of mind at the time of the crime.
CRJ Discussion Two:
Provide your overall assessment of the content and quality of your program of study at Ashford
University. How do you plan to apply what you have learned to your future profession? If you have
already used information gained from your course of study in your profession, share specific examples of
the application of knowledge and skills. What suggestions do you have to improve the Social and Criminal
Justice program?
In addition to this reflection, review the current event resources in the Required Resources section of this
week. Which of these resources do you plan to use in the future? What are some additional news feeds
or current event resources that will help you stay informed on current trends and news in the field?
What I need from Tutor: Substantively respond to at least two of your classmates’ by either
commenting on the examples of how they have already applied these skills, or by offering additional
possibilities for future application that they have not yet considered. Reference the program learning
outcomes in Discussion 1 of Week Five, “Assessing Your Program of Study,” to drive your comments.

My overall assessment of the content and quality of the program at Ashford University is that it was
excellent and well organized. I intend to apply what I have learned to my future profession by
understanding social justice and being as ethical as possible when it comes to my work. I will also use my
education in order to excel and move up in rank. I haven’t yet started my profession, but my father,
brother, fiancé and many friends are already police officers and I have shared with them very useful
information that I’ve picked up. The only suggestion that I have in order to improve the Social and
Criminal Justice program is to seek for course material that is intriguing. If students have fun and enjoy
what they are learning, chances are that they will sustain that information better and want to learn more.
In addition to this reflection, the current event resources in the required resources section of this weeks
course material is very useful and is something that I plan on using When I start the police academy and
begin the academic portion of it, I definitely will refer back to resources that Ashford University has
provided me.
Student Two: Mark Moraga
My overall experience with Ashford University has been very fulfilling and educational. I have learned
more than I ever realized criminal justice encompassed. The discussions, papers, and feedback from my
instructors have all been instrumental in learning and understanding the knowledge that I now have. As I
plan on becoming a police officer and eventually a detective using the knowledge that I have learned will
be crucial to me becoming a great officer and doing so in a manner that keeps me and others safe. I also
believe that the further I take my education the more competitive I will be as a law enforcement
officer. Everything I have learned over my time with Ashford has instilled in me characteristics and traits
that will hopefully make me a great police officer such as; an understanding of diversity and others'
perspectives, knowledge of forensic science techniques, and our Constitutional rights entitled to each of
us. I cannot think of any suggestion that would improve the quality or content of Ashford University as I
have had a great experience thus far. In regards to useful resources, I believe that the newspapers,
television newsfeeds, and even social media can be educational with informing us of new trends. This is
because the information through these means is typically real-time and hopefully unbiased. Information
that is relevant and un-opinionated is an important way of getting news and trends out to the most people
possible in the shortest amount of time.
