THE PROGRESSIVE DECLINE IN VOTING
The Progressive Decline in Voting
Voting is recognized universally as the mark of a functional democratic nation. The
history regarding voting and the development of self-governing countries is an important aspect
of any community. For a long time, voting was regarded as one of the most fundamental rights of
any citizen in various countries. Various groups of people that had been previously barred from
participating in the activity fought and petitioned their way through to gain suffrage.
Unfortunately, following an observation over the recent years, there has been a decline in the
number of people taking part in elections. Several reasons have been given for this supposed
progressive decline in voting. The aim of this paper is to discuss in great depth the reasons
behind this observed decline in voting. The paper will explore different countries and in
particular Canada, Australia, and the United States. The perception concerning voting has
metamorphosed negatively among citizens.
In a democracy, voting can be described as the act of an individual choosing their
preferred candidate from among several candidates eligible for a ruling. The government is
therefore determined by the people and works for the people in different ways such as passing of
bills into laws that help in improving the lives of the governed. The importance of electing the
president, members of parliament and other relevant leaders in governmental positions is to have
a system where everybody’s opinion or choice counts. Since the majority of the votes help in
determining the choice by the people, it is not only necessary but critical for people to actively
take part in electing their leaders. However, this is not the case illustrated by various countries as
more and more people prefer not to partake in this sacred activity. Voters, in essence, shape the
future of their country and that of their children by the choices made on elections day.

voter turnout. For starts, he explores the electoral rules since the 19th and 20th century which
revealed that the electoral institutions had incentives for the political leaders who then amassed
the voters for the election of candidates (Engstrom, 2011). Moreover, the political competition
at the period was an incentive for leaders to mobilize the electorate. Today, these incentives are
lacking due to the varying levels of political competition and the changes incorporated within the
electoral institutions and thus is has become one of the reason explaining the low voter turnout in
the United States (Engstrom, 2011). In a comparison carried out by one of the leading
newsrooms, CNN, the voter turnout in 2016 was 55% while that in ...
