Operationalization and measurement are two vital concepts in research.
Operationalization refers to the process of defining the measurements of certain phenomena in
ways that are not directly measurable. This means that operationalization helps define concepts
in unique ways to make the concepts more understandable, distinguishable and measureable in
terms of repeatable operations and observations (Schäffer, 2008). For instance, the size of a rod
can be defined by the number of times the rod can be laid in a box, using different angles.
Measurement, on the other hand, refers to the observation, collection, and recording of data with
regard to research. Measurements show the relationship between different variables or values
needed to generate meaningful results.
