Analyzing Love Poems by Christina Rossetti
This paper will analyze the theme of love. In particular, we will focus on the love poems written
by Christina Rossetti. She is a poet of the twentieth century and her poems have never left the
public eye and they have always been preserved and she was, at some points, argued to be the
greatest female poet of all time [Marsh (2012)]. She grew up in an affectionate family and started
to write poetry at a tender age. We are going to analyze three love poems “No Thank you John”,
“In an Artist’s Studio” and “I Loved you First” of the poet Christina Rossetti.
No, Thank You, John
This poem portrays a contradictory relationship between a woman (poet) and a man (John). It is
a one-sided conversation (by the poet), which explains John's demands and the poet's feeling

John is adamant about pursuing a girl romantically and is not giving up. He wants to develop a
deeper relationship with her, but the poet struggles to make John understand that she has no
special feelings whatsoever for him but as a friend. This difference of feelings caused conflict
between them [Rossetti (1986)]. The Poet never fell in love, but she was haunted by the pale
eyes of Jon, and do different things to not get into a relationship with him as there are so many
troubles in getting into a relationship.
In the first stanza, the poet says that she never fell in love with him, but the John is playful and
coy in the poem and holds his demands consistently. The poet warns the John to stop teasing her
often because all this is wearing her down with always to think about something. She describes

her level of irritation with the word "wax weariness" which she gets from his emphasis. In the
second stanza, she makes him clear that it was not her fault that she fell prey to his eyes. She is
haunted by the pale and sickly eyes. John throws her way every time they cross paths. In this
stanza, the poet states that it is not in her behavior to lead to men and that the women should not
be held responsible for the feelings men have. The woman here comes out as strong and
unbowed [Rossetti (1986)].
In the third stanza, the poet, even suggests other girls to John that would gladly accept his
proposal if he asks. Meg or Moll, she says would take pity upon him and would gladly walk by
his side. She encourages him to move on and have pleasant days of life, a...
