Identity status theory (Marcia)
Description of Marcia’s’ theory
James Marcia developed four identity statuses of the process of psychology and identity
formation and development. He argued that an individual's sense of identity is determined by the
kind of decisions and commitments that one focuses. The commitments are quite relative
depending on the personal and social traits of the individual in question. Marcia quite focuses on
adolescents and their development process.
Addressing the issue on identity crisis, Marcia argued that the adolescent stage involves
neither the process of identity confusion nor resolution but the extent to which an individual has
committed to an identity in different life aspects and stages from social, political and economic
aspects of life. This theory of identity argues that two distinct aspects determine the adolescent
identity. During the time of moral and choice reevaluation and the commitments that one
engages. He defined a crisis as a time for unrests and upheavals where the individual traits,
characters, and morals are being reexamined. The final results of the crisis finally lead to a
commitment that is established towards a certain moral code.
James Marcia developed an identity development process involving, identity diffusion as

and morals; basically, they tend to follow the expectations of others senior guiding them, and
individuals are not yet settled since they have a range of commitment options to settle in.
Identity moratorium is when an adolescent is currently in a crisis and is in the exploration stage
of evaluating and analyzing different commitments and is already decided on the kind of
commitment that they want to make, but they have not yet chosen the particular commitment to

settle in. Identity achievement is the last stage where an individual has already identified the
commitment to settle in and has already established the sense of identity to some certain moral
and behavioral grounding.
The basic idea is that an individual's sense of identity is largely determined by the kind of
personal commitments, values, and choices that one chooses to follow. This theory explains the
kind of choices and commitments that defines an adolescent’ characters. Identity involves th...
