Description
Is inequality in the U.S. rising or falling?
As we have seen, our economic well-being depends on many factors: income, wealth, pre-or post-tax earnings, family size and whether or not earnings postponed to the future. Consequently, it isn’t surprising that politicians can find data to support nearly any position about whether Americans are getting poorer or richer. In this week’s assignment, you will investigate the use of data by two economists who reach entirely opposite conclusions.
Steven Pearlstein, conservative business columnist for the Washington Post, argues that the middle class continues to do well.

On the other hand, Jared Berstein, writing in the liberal The American Prospect magazine maintains that living standards have slipped for the middle class.

The article by Steven is that there is need to analyze the national trend that has been
going on, in which there has been a steady increase in job opportunities, especially the job
opportunities that bring high returns. The argument is that the whole debate of the gap being
increasing is that it is only because the people have been comparing the statistics rather than
focusing on the gains that have been made. For example, one of the reinforcing factors that the
article relies on is the need to eliminate the extremes on the old and the young, which has seen
the income among American families rise within to the limits of the middle-income families.
