Effects of Population Changes on the Environment: Theoretical Perspectives
Changes in the population are often associated with other factors such as mortality,
fertility, migration, and life expectancy. It is the interaction of these factors that results in
population growth or decline. Most of the factors that determine population growth are directly
associated with the environment. Diseases and biotic and abiotic factors have a significant
influence the change in population size (Ritzer, 2016). Prevalence of diseases, shortage of food
and variation in temperature affect life expectancy and slow down of population growth. When
these conditions are favorable, it leads to a population boom. When the population grows, it
strains the available resources. When the pressure of the population exceeds the carrying
capacity of the given environment, it causes degradation. The degraded environment then
becomes unfavorable for the population. The forces behind population change are essentially
from the environment (Mooney, Knox, & Schacht, 2016). A look at the effects of population
change on the environment from structural-functional, social-conflict, and symbolic interaction
perspectives shows varied correlations.
When the population increases rapidly, it leads to urbanization. The high population in
urban areas causes a strain on resources such as food and clean water. As the resources get
extracted beyond the rate at which they get replenished naturally, the environment begins to
deteriorate (Ritzer, 2016). Those resources become scarcer to a point where they get exhausted
or become too polluted to be...
