Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston on January 17, 1706 to poor parents. Despite his background, Franklin became gentleman, scholar, an educated scientist, entrepreneur, politician, and, maybe more importantly, a man of significant Psychological influence.

Franklin suggested a famous psychological phenomenon, the Ben Franklin effect. In the phenomenon, Franklin argued that, when we help a man out, we tend to like them more accordingly. This is on the grounds that we legitimize our activities to ourselves that we helped them out on the grounds that we preferred them (McConkey et al, 2002).

Franklin, Freud and Erikson based their physiological ideas on the psychodynamic approach, they saw human working in view of the collaboration of drives and strengths inside the individual, especially oblivious, and between the diverse structures of the identity.

Introduction

Benjamin Franklin was born to an English-born candle maker Josiah Franklin on January
17, 1706 in Boston (Franklin, 1998). Born to a poor family, he is an example of few individuals
of the world’s history who have ascended to fame and of great significance to the philosophical
world. Benjamin became one of the leading early American historical figures as a publisher,
entrepreneur, author, scientist, philosopher, statesman and diplomat. Ben learned to read and
write at an early age in Boston Latin School. Despite his success, his learning dream was cut
short at the age of 10 to work in his father’s candle and soap shop. The young boy was not
interested in the candle business and he apprenticed him to his brother James at his print shop at
the age of 12 years (Franklin, 1998). Working with James was not an enjoyable experience as the
elder brother was tyrannical and harsh and often mistreated the boy. At the age of 17, Benjamin
could not endure anymore the harsh treatment he received from his brother and therefore he fled
to New York before settling in Philadelphia (Simon, 2013). At this stage of life, Benjamin
became more aggressive in life and was determined to succeed. He landed a job in Philadelphia
in a print shop as he stayed with the family of one John Read where he courted Deborah, his
landlord’s daughter (Franklin, 1906; McConkey & Perry, 2002).

The journey of Benjamin Franklin to success explains the development of human beings
to achieve different goals in life. The concept of human development involves improving the
well-being of people by enlarging their opportunities and freedom (Franklin, 1906). Hence
human beings have the freedom of choice depending on who they want to be, what to do, and
how and where to live. Different theories have formulated and discussed various theories which

help in explaining development of human being. In this case, we shall review a number of
theorists to compare and contrast Benjamin’s development journey. The theorists whom we shall
use in this discussion are: Erikson, Freud and Maslow.
According to Erikson, human development consists of eight stages from infancy to
adulthood (Greenberg, 2016). He believed that human beings developed as they successfully
resolved different hardships or crises which were social in nature. This led to developing a sense
of trust or establishing a sense of trust which played an essential role in preparation for the
future. He maintained that personality developed in a predetermined order, building upon the
previous stages. Considering Erikson psychosocial analysis of human development, the growth
of Benjamin can be explained. Erikson’s fourth stage of development occurs between the ages of
five to twelve (Franklin, 2004). He asserted that children learnt how to read and write and do
things on their own. At this phase, Benjamin Franklin was a success at the Boston Latin School
