Final project For your final project, you will be analyzing real data from the General Social Survey (GSS). The GSS is a sociological survey used to collect data on demographic characteristics and attitudes of residents of the United States. The survey is conducted face-to-face with an in-person interview by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, of adults (18+) in randomly selected households. The survey was conducted every year from 1972 to 1994. Since 1994, it has been conducted every other year. The data I have selected for you is from 2012. The original data set has over 300 variables. I have edited it to 46 variables. The data set is called “SPSS data for final project.” You can find it under the “Assignments” tab on Blackboard. What will I be doing? Using SPSS, you will analyze the data. In total, you must conduct 10 tests. You must include: • • • • • Two independent samples t-tests Two correlations Two chi-square tests Two ANOVAS You may choose the remaining tests. For each test you conduct, you must state: (1) why you conducted the test (what were you trying to figure out) (2) the type of test that you conducted (independent samples t-test, correlation, chi square test, ANOVA) (3) the variables that you used (state if you recoded or excluded) (4) the independent variable and the dependent variable (NOTE: correlations do not have IVs and DVs) (5) the results of the test, including whether the test was significant (state p value) (6) what the results mean What would an example look like? For my first test, I wanted to determine if respondents who were 21 and older spent significantly more time on using email than respondents who were 20 and younger. To do this, I conducted an independent samples t-test. I used the variable “emailweekmin” (variable 14) as the dependent variable and I recoded “ageofrespondent” (variable 42) into two groups, “21 and older” and “20 and younger,” and used this new variable as the independent variable. The results of the test showed that the mean for respondents who were 21 and older was 5.23 minutes of email use per week and the mean for respondents who were 20 and younger was 6.12 minutes of email use per week. The p value for the test was p = .700. The test was not significant. This means that respondents who were 20 and younger spent about the same amount of time using email than respondents who were 21 and older. When is it due? June 25 by 9 pm. Turn your project in through Blackboard. You may turn your project in early. How long should it be? 5 to 7 pages, double spaced, 12 point font (preferably Times New Roman), standard margins. How will it be assessed? I will be grading the degree to which: • • • Tests are used appropriately Variables are used appropriately Results are explained appropriately
