Analysis of ‘A Doll's House Play’
The Difference between Watching and Reading the Play
Reading a play and watching a play have significate difference in communicating
the message and content being displayed. Both the listene r and the reader have a
different intuition of the elements that affect their view of the play (Frasca, 229).
This fact is also evident in the play A Doll’s House that presents different scenarios
in both watching and reading. When watching the play, there is anxiety about
whether Torvald will be able to go and look at the letterbox or if Nora will manage
to convince him to stay and wait. The viewer has a sense of yearning and emotions
high to see if Torvald will know the secret at that time.
However, these feelings are absent when reading the text since the reader
does not necessarily relate and have a sense of nostalgia on the events that are
likely to unfold. An example is depicted when Kristine explains to Nora about the
loss of her husband and how he left him without anything. The viewer can
sympathize with Kristine, and also the emotions and reactions of Nora are seen as
opposed to reading where the reader cannot be able to relate. When viewing the
play, it is also able to see the joy that Krogstad had when Mrs. Linde agreed to love

when watching the play as opposed to when reading. For example, when Torvald
argues with his wife on the dismissal of Krogstad, the viewer can relate to the
heated discussion and the moods present in the environment as opposed when
reading the text he/she may not be in a position to compare on how the argumen t
transpired. The agitation and arguments cannot be vividly determined by the reader
of the text when reading as compared to a person watching (Wright and And...
