Please do not hesitate to ask me any questions.

PART ONE:

Final Paper Preparation

To prepare for your Final Paper (due in Week Five), complete the following assignment and submit it to your instructor for feedback. Your paper should include a problem statement, outline, and annotated bibliography.

Problem Statement: Describe the social problem selected for your paper.

Outline: Using the sample below as a guide, provide an outline for your Final Paper. Remember that papers are expected to define a significant problem faced by the justice system, describe the scope and consequences of the problem, and discuss society’s responses to the problem (including public policies and other less formal responses). Your paper should also present a clearly reasoned alternative, supported by scholarly research.

  • Title
  • Abstract
  • What is the problem? Be sure to narrow your problem enough to allow a focused examination.
  • What are the individual and social implications of this problem? Discussion of implications should be supported by accurate research data.
  • What do the experts say about the problem?
  • What have we, as a society, done about this problem? Consider public policies and other, less formal responses.
  • How are public policies and other, less formal responses working?
  • Describe an alternative solution to the problem.
  • Discuss why the alternative is, or can be, an effective response to the problem. Remember to consider negative consequences of the alternative response.
  • Conclude with your thoughts about your chosen social problem. This is a good place to include personal opinions, assuming you wish to share them in a research paper.
  • References

In short, define a problem, discuss the response, and provide alternative responses to the problem. My problem is drug use/abuse, with a focus on prescription drug abuse among teenagers. Your description of the problems should be fact based, relying on expert opinion. Your alternative can be an adjustment of current policy or a new direction. For example, you may propose longer prison sentences, or legalization of all drugs. Be creative, although suggestions must be supported by scholarly research.

Annotated Bibliography: The purpose of creating a list of sources is to assist you in organizing and evaluating your research. The list should include the following information for each source (minimum of five):

  • Name of the source, including the complete bibliographic citation in proper APA format.
  • Summary of the source (at least one paragraph) including how this source will contribute to your paper.

The paper must be three to five pages in length and formatted according to APA style. You must use at least five scholarly resources other than the textbook to support your claims and sub-claims. Cite your resources in text and on the reference page.

PART TWO:

Final Paper

Select and then define a significant issue faced by the justice system, describe the scope and consequences of the issue, and discuss society’s responses to the issue (including public policies and other less formal responses). Papers should also present a clearly reasoned alternative, supported by scholarly research.

While the following example can be modified to suit your needs, this outline is likely to result in a high-quality Final Paper:

  • Title
  • Abstract
  • What is the problem? Be sure to narrow your problem enough to allow a focused examination.
  • What are the individual and social implications of this problem? Discussion of implications should be supported by accurate research data.
  • What do the experts say about the problem?

  • How are public policies and other, less formal responses working?
  • Describe an alternative solution to the problem.
  • Discuss why the alternative is, or can be, an effective response to the problem. Remember to consider negative consequences of the alternative response.
  • Conclude with your thoughts about your chosen social problem. This is a good place to include personal opinions, assuming you wish to share them in a research paper.

DRUD ABUSE AS A JUSTICE SYSTEM PROBLEM

2

Abstract
In the last three decades, the number of drug users incarcerated in various part of the
world has increased tremendously. The justice system in the United States is receiving
thousands of cases of teenagers' abuse of drugs daily. The rise in the number of cases of drug
abuse has hindered proper dispensation of justice to the victims. In some situations, the
Justice system is forced to make an uninformed decision on some cases presented to them.
Despite the lawyers having a proper understanding of the cases, the bad policies in the past
are to be blamed for a huge overload of the cases related to drug abuse. In addition, peer
pressure among the youths is the cause of the increase in a number of cases reported. The
essence of this paper is to examine how drug abuse is a problem in the dispensation of justice
in the judicial system.
Problem Definition
Drug abuse in the society has been on a rise in the last three decades. The numbers of
cases reported of teenagers' abuse of drugs in the justice system have curtailed proper
dispensation of justice to the victims. In the recent past, the government has passed tough
measures on how the drugs should be used in the society. The policies that are tailored to
reduce the drug use in the society should be blamed for the rise of the drug in the United
States (Dammer & Albanese, 2013). Criminalization of drugs has contributed to the
application of harsh punitive sanctions that are imposed on drug users. The criminalization
has led to an increase in the rate of incarceration of the teenagers.
Individual and Social Implications of Drug Abuse in the society
The rise in the number of drug abuse among the teenagers has contributed to
numerous social implications. In the society, the drug abusers are normally isolated in social,
political, and economic development activities. The majority of the people in the society do

not like associating themselves with drug users. In terms of political participations, some
laws passed by the Justice Systems restraints inmates who have indulge in drug abuse to
participate in elections procedure or be elected to political seats. The drug addicts are also
alienated in participating in political decision processes (Volkow et al, 2014). In terms of
economic activities, the drug abuse hinders youths from participating in productive economic
activities.
Experts Point of View
A study conducted Segal et al (2014) to establish adolescent substance abuse
treatment in the United States indicates that drug abuse among the youths has increased by
more than 40 percent from 2011 to 2014 because of lack of community participation in
solving the menace. According to studies conducted by National Institute on Drug Abuse, the
federal and States government spend more than $740 billion in the provision of Healthcare,
rehabilitation programs, and in treating victims. According to reports by United Nations on
Drug Abuse and Crime, Cocaine, Heroine, and marijuana are the most abused drugs in
various parts of the world.
Society Participation Through public Policies
Even though the government agencies and court system are vested with the
responsibility of eradicating drug abuse in the society, the people in the society have the
responsibility to ensure that drug abuse among the youths is a thing of the past. To reduce
drug abuse among the youths, the society has come up with training programs to sensitize the
youths on the dangers of abuse of drugs (Schmalleger et al, 2014). In addition, the society is
putting more efforts on educating children in schools. Furthermore, the society is investing
heavily on youths incentives to encourage them to participate in economic activities.

In ending drug abuse among the youths, the social intervention strategies have really
worked well in reducing the number of cases of drug abuse in the society. For instance, the
society intervention through sensitization of the youths has enabled youths to understand the
dangers of the use of drugs to their health. The sensitization programs have also enabled
youths to understand the benefits of engaging in economic activities.
Alternative Solution
To end drug abuse among the youths, the government needs to pass tough penalties
on drug users. Apart from a jail term, the drug users must be compelled to pay huge penalty
fees. When the drug addicts accomplish prison time, they should be forced to participate in
the community services and further...
