ART 448 East Los Angeles College Consumer Culture and Art Essay
You are to respond to the prompt found below in a 4 to 5-page paper. Read through all of the instructions that follow before beginning the assignment. Prompt: In response to the spread of postwar consumer culture and the expanding global economy, contemporary artists have reflected on the commodity status of art in their work. While many openly embraced art as a commodity, some even going as far as to include consumer goods in their work, a number of artists deliberately circumvented the production of art objects easily bought and sold on the art market and/or openly critiqued contemporary consumerism. For this paper, select four artworks that reflect different ways in which the commodity has been accounted for in contemporary artwork. Describe each artwork in some detail and analyze its formal properties and content, identifying the style/movement it is associated with. Also indicate when and where each artwork was created and address how the context in which the artist was working was influential on his/her artwork.Artwork selection: Select the four artworks thoughtfully. The artworks chosen must be representative of four different artistic styles/movements and must be taken from four different PowerPoints posted to the weekly modules. Properly identify each artwork (include the title, artist, and date). Your discussion of each artwork must address its formal properties and the relevant style/movement, subject matter, and the context in which it was created.References: Your paper should expand upon information found in the textbooks and course assignments (successful papers will not include text copied and pasted from course assignments, but instead consist of new text generated for this assignment). You must consult at least two credible sources in addition to your textbooks. Please only reference the following sources: books, scholarly articles, museum websites, and Khan Academy. If you quote, please keep it to a minimum, and include proper citations in MLA or The Chicago Manual of Style format. Include a bibliography at the end of your paper.Formatting guidelines: Your paper must be at least 4 full pages of text (and no longer than 5 full pages) and contain an introduction with a strong thesis statement, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. It is to be typed in Times New Roman 12-point font and double-spaced, with one-inch margins. Proofread your work for typos and grammatical errors. You do not need to upload reproductions of the artworks. Please follow the instructions carefully; failure to do so will negatively affect your grade on the assignment. Plagiarized assignments will not receive credit.

Essex County College Humanities Question Romeo and Juliet Play Paper
Required Resources
Read/review the following resources for this activity:
Textbook: Chapter 8
Play from the Internet, YouTube, DVD, iTunes, Amazon, Netflix, etc.
1 primary source (written version of selected play)
Instructions
Plays are meant to be performed, rather than read. The purpose of dramatic arts often extends far beyond the words written on a page; staging, lighting, costumes intonation, expression, and audience experience are all part of the experience of a theatrical production. To develop your understanding of the cultural role of the dramatic arts, you will view a production of a play this week and write a reflection to explain your viewing experience. Choose a play that you would like to view and find a version online, YouTube, DVD or iTunes, Amazon, Netflix, etc. You can also choose to see a play live if you prefer.
Play Suggestions:
A Midsummer Night's Dream
Romeo and Juliet
As You Like It
Taming of the Shrew
The Tempest
Much Ado About Nothing
The Comedy of Errors
Macbeth
King Lear
If you have another idea, please ask your instructor to approve it.
Then, select and address one of the following options:
Option 1: Write an analysis of the play that you viewed. Include at least one quote from the play in your essay. In your essay, address the following:
Identify the performance that you have selected.
Describe the staging, lighting, costumes, and characters of the performance. How do these match or revise the written version of the play? You do not need to read the entire play, but you should skim the text.
What type of mood and tone does the performance create? How?
What parts of the play are easier to understand through performance? What are some details that stood out through performance?
What are your feelings about this performance? What did you take away from viewing it?
Option 2: Find an adaptation or transformation of a play. Choose an adaptation with some significant differences from the original, such as transposed plots and characters into a variety of different settings and historical contexts. Here are some examples:
A Midsummer Night's Dream - A Midsummer Night's Dream (1999) or A Midsummer Night's DREAM (2018)
Romeo and Juliet - Romeo + Juliet (1996) or West Side Story (1961) or Romeo Must Die (2000)
As You Like It - As You Like It (2006)
Taming of the Shrew - 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) or Kiss Me, Kate (1948)
Much Ado About Nothing - Much Ado About Nothing (2012)
The Comedy of Errors - The Bomb-itty of Errors (2012)
King Lear - A Thousand Acres (1997)
Othello - O (2001)
Hamlet - The Lion King (2019 or 1994) or Hamlet (2000)
Twelfth Night - She's the Man (2006)
If you have another idea, please ask your instructor to approve it.
Watch the original version and the adapted version. In your essay, address the following:
How is the adaptation the same as the original? Discuss plot, characters, theme, conflict, language, etc.
How does the adaptation differ from the original? Discuss setting, time period, characters, plot, language, etc.
Does the original story translate well in the adaptation? Why or why not? Did the adaptation work in a different setting, time period, etc. Why or why not?
Why do you think Shakespeare's plays are adapted so often?

Discussion #2: Reconstructing the Nation
The Civil War ended on April 9, 1865, and the original goal of the North to preserve the Union was accomplished. The task that lay before Lincoln and Congress was to reintegrate the rebellious Southern states into the Union. For many white southerners "Reconstruction was a vicious and destructive experience - a period when vindictive Northerners inflicted humiliation and revenge on a pro-state South."
In order to prepare for this discussion forum:
Review and identify the relevant sections of Chapters 17 and 18 that support your discussion.
Review and identify relevant information on the linked PBS American Experience site, Reconstruction The Second Civil War

This link will direct you to the full transcript of the Wade-Davis Bill. What does it suggest about the prevailing Reconstruction sentiments in Congress?
Read the section in Chapter 17 which discusses the Black Codes, and the linked site on the Black Codes.
Read the linked document, a selection from The Ills of the South, written by Charles H. Okten, a Mississippi Baptist preacher, and schoolteacher, in which he describes conditions for Black Americans under the sharecropping and crop-lien system. After you have completed your readings, post your response to ONE of the following questions:
Were the Black Codes another form of slavery?
Based on Okten's statements, discuss how the sharecropping/crop lien system created a vicious cycle. Was this system simply another version of slavery? Why or why not.
Consider the following statement: "The persistence of racism in both the North and the South lay at the heart of Reconstruction's failure." Agree or disagree, and explain your position.

Going with the Flow: Agile Development at Dell | Harvard Business Publishing Education
Case Study Overview:
In February 2017 the Team Project Manager and Flow Project Coordinator for Dell Technologies-Limerick (Ireland), is preparing for a review with Dell's Systems and Processes Improvement board, early in a transition from the use of one agile software development method (Scrum) to another (Flow, which applies lean manufacturing techniques to software engineering). The new manager has been on board for less than six months. With ten years' prior software development experience in Brazil, he moved to Ireland when hired by Dell. Dell is midway through its attempts to transform from a manufacturing-heavy strategy to an IT-supported service-heavy strategy; its recent acquisition of EMC is an important step in that direction, and executives expect Flow will help globally-distributed software developers produce higher quality code, faster, in follow-the-sun mode. The Flow coordinator/champion recognizes Flow is a complex innovation; it will take time and focus for busy software developers (who only recently mastered Scrum techniques) to master new Flow techniques. The champion is also concerned that needed digital Kanban functionality (essential for supporting globally distributed teams using Flow) has not yet been approved or provided by the Dell IT organization in Texas; this and other obstacles are impeding the developers' transition to Flow. Keen to demonstrate his commitment to help Dell achieve these aims, he worries that some executives expect performance improvements sooner than teams can realistically deliver. He seeks to persuade executives to be both patient and helpful. As he plans his 20-minute presentation for the next day's meeting, he is told to keep his remarks to executives simple: highlight no more than three messages.
Questions:
What should Ferreira do next to accelerate Flow Adoption?
What three points should Ferreira make at the 7 Feb 2017 SPI Board Review?
Review the seven lean manufacturing principles and demonstrate how Ferreira used them when implementing Flow.

Case Study Overview:
In conventional business and government megaprojects--such as hydroelectric dams, chemical-processing plants, or big-bang enterprise-resource-planning systems--the standard approach is to build something monolithic and customized. Such projects must be 100% complete before they can deliver benefits: Even when it's 95% complete, a nuclear reactor is of no use. On the basis of 30 years of research and consulting on megaprojects, the author has found two factors that play a critical role in determining success or failure: replicable modularity in design and speed in iteration. The article examines those factors by looking at well-known megaprojects, both successful ones, and cautionary tales.
