Introduction
The term "religious tourism" is a phrase composed of two distinct words, ‘religious' and
‘tourism.' The former refers to a connection with a divine entity, based on the religious
affiliations of the subject. The latter, on the other hand, relates to the act of traveling with the aim
of gaining some knowledge or for the pleasure of fulfillment of a particular desire. Therefore, the
phrase religious tourism refers to the individual or group travel of people with the intent of
pilgrimage, missionary work, or for the experience of a connection with the sacred entities in
their respective religions.
Scholars have however played down pilgrimage as an aspect of religious tourism, arguing
that the latter is a contemporary creation whereas the former has been in existence for many
years now. They argue that due to the increase in the scale of travel to specific destinations over
the years, administrations have sought to commercialize the whole enterprise, hence the
relationship to tourism.
Originally, the travels were strict to establish or reestablish a connection with the deities
worshiped or looked up to by the various religions. This point appreciates the fact that almost all
religions had a natural area where they believed that a significant event in the history of their
religion had occurred. This area, they believed, had a concentration of divine presence and
therefore, making a prayer at the site increased the chances of divine intervention in their
prayers.
This is the foundation upon which the essence of pilgrimage was initiated. During these
times, religions were based on the different cultures present, and thus each culture or people had
their version of a pilgrimage. However, the world experienced a lot of dynamics regarding
globalization and exchange of cultures. Therefore beliefs spread throughout the world and due to
assimilation, new recruits were inducted into religions and during indoctrination, sensitized on
the sacred spots that the religions boasted (dos Santos, 2015).
