The role of Christianity

The medieval period began immediately after the fall of the Roman Empire. However,
the Christian church played a vital role in constituting what was referred to as respublica
christana. The respublica christiana included the shifting configurations, the Roman Empire that
had already collapsed and portions of Europe. Through this form of an arrangement, there was
no distinction between the civil and religious roles that were played by different parties (Lassner
& Bonner, 2010). However, the two were seen as interdependent departments that would
eventually rule the nations. Thus, the difference between ‘sword and spirit,' as well as ‘coercion
and belief' in the Christian experience, were retained in a highly disguised form. There was also
an intimate relationship between spiritual authority and political authority.
On the other hand, Charlemagne also succeeded n the 9th century where he was in a
position to bring together the barbarian tribes and form one large Christian empire in the west. In
this period of time, he was the leader of the church and helped the people of the barbarian
kingdoms come together to form one union (Vallée, 2009). At the same period of time, political
power was not meant to defend against territories and fight battles but to spread Christianity and
protect it from those who opposed the religion. Christian belief and practice were the main ideas
of the union and every person was expected to stand in the gap and play their protective roles. By
the 13th century, most of the kings were replaced by church heads including Popes and had the
ultimate authority over the people. Most of the Kingdoms in the western gave room for
Christianity and protected its spread over large parts of the nations.
Through the unity implemented by Christianity in the west, the western embraced
Christianity and lived by the virtues that were elaborated. On the other hand, crusades were held
