Description

Select one of the following ethical issues in healthcare from the following choices:

  • Gender selection in human embryos
  • Stem cell transplants
  • Foregoing curative medical treatment due to religious beliefs
  • Futility of care
  • Abortion after six months.

Use the CSU Global Library and select Internet sources to conduct research on your chosen topic. Based on your research, provide the history of the issue from a legal, ethical, and moral perspective. In your paper address the following questions:

  1. Do the consequences of actions always direct what is morally required?
  2. What should happen when two principles come into conflict? For example, should patient autonomy be considered more important than beneficence? Defend your position.
  3. Are moral and ethically rules always binding, or are they only guidelines to be assessed in each case? Defend your position.

Your paper should meet the following requirements:

  • Be ten to twelve pages in length, not including the cover or reference pages.
  • Be formatted according to the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA Requirements.
  • Provide support for your statements with in-text citations from a minimum of eight scholarly references - four of these references must be from outside sources and four may be from course readings, lectures, and textbooks. The CSU-Global Library is a good place to find these references.
  • Utilize headings to organize the content in your work.

The Ethical Battle:
Stem Cell Transplants

Health care ethics are challenged daily and have been for decades. These ethics are moral
and legal principles that apply to the scientific research and the practice of medicine. One of the
more popular ethical issues faced in health care today is stem cell transplants. In fact, stem cell
research is an area of scientific research that has been the most tightly dictated by ethical
considerations (Legal & Political, 2017). However, this is not a new topic of interest. In fact, the
studies of the effects of stem cells on the human body began in the late nineteenth century. Due
to the controversial aspects of stem cell transplants, it has only become more popular over the
last century. Legal actions have been put into effect multiple times in order to prevent stem cell
research from progressing. These legal actions are usually based upon the ethical issues found in
the research. Currently, there have been improvements made in helping this field of study
advance. While the controversial issues of stem cell transplants include numerous morally valid
points-of-view, this is a topic in the medical field that must be analyzed by an overall view. This
is due to the fact that, ethically speaking, it is a field of study that is going to enhance medical
research by curing cancers and diseases for people all over the world. The medical field has yet
to develop a cure for cancer but with the enhancement of stem cell research, cancer can be
eliminated once it is discovered. However, this cannot happen without the public gaining a
profound understanding of the ethical issues behind the slow progress of stem cell transplant
research, which includes understanding the process involved in the many areas of SCR. The
main stem cell transplant ethical issues that the medical field faces today include Embryonic
Stem Cell Research and Somatic Stem Cell Research.

Ethical and Moral Issues

Stem Cell Research (SCR) has been a slow process in the medical field. While part of
this is due to the fact that it is an intense field of study that involves years of research and clinical
trials, the main obstacle that SCR faces is the ethical and moral issues that arise throughout the
studies. Five of the key areas of study in SCR include Multipotent Stem Cells, Induced
Pluripotent Stem Cells, Embryonic Stem Cell Research, Fetal Stem Cells and Somatic Cell
Nuclear Transfer (Lo & Parham, 2009). While many different ethical and moral issues have been
publicized on SCR, the main two issues that are continuously publicized include the necessary
use of embryos in SCR as well as the concept of cloning. Scientists have developed multiple
approaches to try to end the ethical issues. Unfortunately, each change that is made introduces a
new ethical issue. There are no ethical issues with Multipotent Stem Cells and Induced
Pluripotent Stem Cells. This is due to the fact that neither of these areas of study includes
embryos or cloning. The argument typically brought up is why doesn't SCR expand on these two
areas the in order to exclude the three areas that bring forth ethical issues. While this is an
excellent proposal, it is not ideal due to the fact that these two areas will not expand SCR to its
full potential due to the many restrictions in these areas. Even, with more extensive time and
research, they were able to enhance the use of these two research methods of stem cells, it would
be adding decades to what has already taken too long to discover. Instead, one must focus on the
ethical issues presented and determine how important these issues are compared to the end
results of SCR. There are many religious views that find SCR morally wrong which plays a large
role in the development of the ethical issues. The majority of ethical and moral issues found in
SCR include the use of embryos and the concep...
