All individuals must endeavor to portray ethics in their workplace. This is true for
teachers as it is for investigators. In the case of Mrs. Pettit and her loss of job, there are various
points of approach to understand her situation. Regarding the violation of Mrs. Pettit’s rights to
privacy, the board of education is without reason. As a citizen of the United States, Mrs. Pettit is
protected by the privacy laws where an employer should not invade their employee’s privacy. By
using Sargent Berk’s findings when he went to a swinger’s party where he observed as Mrs.
Pettit did sexually pervasive actions, the board infiltrated in the privacy rights of the teacher.
Prior to her being charged in the court of law, the teacher who spilled the beans
concerning Mrs. Pettit’s swinger affiliations after identifying her in an interview with her
husband violated her rights to privacy. Considering that the board also based their decision to
terminate her license to teach on submissions made by three administrators who considered Mrs.
Pettit unfit to teach based on the information that they had received, the board missed out on
upholding this fundamental right to privacy for Mrs. Pettit.
