Genetic Alterations and Cancer
Cancer is a disease that occurs as a result of the subdivision of abnormal cells in any part
of the body. Cells grow uncontrollably and crowd out normal cells leading to abnormal
functioning of the body. Abnormal cells are a product of genetic alteration in body cells, and in
some instances, the alterations have no impact on the health of the individual. On the other hand,
sometimes the genetic alterations increase the risk of the individual developing cancer. Due to
the difficulty in predicting which cells will behave abnormally and subdivide uncontrollably,
there are different types of cancers and a person can have several different cancers. Examples
include myeloma, leukemia, breast cancer, cervical cancer, oral, and stomach and lung cancer.
Diagnosis and Staging of Cancer
According to the National Cancer Institute, the diagnosis and staging of cancer
progression through a series of stages and the progression is geared by the growth of genetic
modifications (NCI, 2017). Since cancer causes, a myriad of symptoms that can be easily
misdiagnosed individuals has to undergo a full body examination in order to correctly place the
symptoms (NCI, 2017). Screening tests are helpful in the diagnosis process, and they help in
identifying the extent of the cancer growth. This identification and classification of the growth or
advancement are referred to as staging.
Screening is used in identifying the occurrence of abnormal masses such that the first step
of the process is the identification of tumors and discovering their nature and origin. Some of the
techniques used in screening include X-Rays, ultrasonography, computer tomography and
magnetic resonance imaging (AJCC, 2017). However, all these techniques are only useful for
