  • For each level of the environment, include the following:
    • A brief explanation of the system and how it influences development.
    • A description of how the system affects the problem.
    • Identify additional factors that can affect the problem.
  • Explain how bidirectional relationships between the systems can affect the problem.
  • Discuss any weaknesses or flaws in the application of Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory to your chosen topic.

Additional Requirements

Ecological Systems Theory Application to Child abuse and neglect
Urie Bronfenbrenner developed ecological systems theory, and it identifies five
environmental systems with which a person interacts. Communist psychologists use this theory
to explain human relationships within a given society. The five ecological systems are
microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem, and chronosystem. The method strives to
explain human lifespan development, how a child’s surrounding influences their growth and
development basing on the five systems. (Bronfenbrenner, 1974).
Scholars have applied this theory to their study of various topics within the human
lifespan development, for instance, Johnson (2008) uses the ecological systems theory to explain
accountability in the education of an individual. Equally Saraw (2010) analyzed child protection
from an ecological perspective.
Brief overview of the problem; child abuse and neglect
Child abuse and neglect refer to an act of failure of the parent or caretaker to protect a
child which results in harm or death. This is when a caregiver fails to provide the child with
basic needs such as shelter, clothing, food and assuring them of emotional, physical, safety and
educational needs. Child abuse occurs in four ways, physical where bodily harm is involved such
as beating a child. Neglect as a form of child abuse, the parent fails in their responsibility of the
child, thirdly, psychological abuse which involves activities that result in mental problems and
lastly sexual assault where an older person uses a child for sexual stimulation.
Ill-treatment and neglect affect a child’s development, for instance, psychological abuse
may lead to abnormal child growth such as impaired brain development and delayed movements.
Additionally, different forms of neglect affect a child’s growth, according to ecological systems
