THEORIES OF INTELLIGENCE

Howard Gardner theory

Howard Gardner came up with the theory of multiple intelligence which views
intelligence as a tool that can be used to solve a problem or develop products of value to different
cultures. Howard came up with multiple intelligence theory because he thought that the normal
conception of intelligence which is based on IQ testing is so limited. He argued that different
people possess different types of intelligence that they can use to benefit themselves and the
society they are in. For example, linguistic intelligence; which can be found mostly in lawyers,
writers and even poets, is a type of intelligence whereby individuals have the capability to learn
languages easily and use the language to achieve specific targets. There are six other types of
intelligence which include special intelligence, musical intelligence, logical-mathematical
intelligence, etc (Shim & Cassady, 2013). This is different from Spearman's G factor (General
Intelligence) theory because in the Howard thinks that intelligence is something that an
individual can learn while Spearman thinks that intelligence is something one is born with. I find
the Howard theory to be most agreeable seeing as people nowadays learn things such as poetry
and law and with time they become really good at it.
