Grieving is a natural process experienced in almost every culture across the world.
Grieving is a process that occurs when a person loses someone close or something that one
treasured in response to the loss. It involves a mixture of emotions sadness, anger or loneliness.
Grieving does not always entail the physical death of a loved one, and it can be as a result of a
broken relationship, loss of job, changes in life such as chronic diseases however the primary
cause is a death of a loved one. Mourning occurs as a response to loss. Every person undergoes
grieving process at some point in life either knowingly or unknowingly. People grief differently
based on various factors such as age, gender, personality, surrounding, cultural beliefs or value
of the loss. (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016) Some experience emotional reactions, others
physical such as fatigue, crying while others are affected cognitively, may react with feelings of
guilt or relief.
According to Kübler-Ross, Kessler & Shriver (2014), grieving takes place in five stages
denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. When a person first learns of a loss they
do not want to believe it has happened, a defense mechanism. As the person comes to term with
what has happened, they develop anger towards life or mighty powers and frustration due to the
pain. Thirdly, a person regrets and bargains over what they could have done to prevent the loss
and religious believers debate with God. Afterwards, a person begins to understand the effects of
the loss and go into depression. They lack appetite, have problems sleeping and often cry. At
