The developing countries are faced with many influential factors in the health care policy
and interventions. These may lead to slow progressions in all the sectors that are based in the
healthcare system of the particular country. Colombia falls into the category of a developing
country and is not short of these issues in all areas of livelihood in the country including the
Burden of disease, Socioeconomic, Cultural and Structural factors in the healthcare system. The
country is located in South America and is on the verge of recovering after the end of a war that
lasted for over five decades leading to very negative results on the country in general. However,
they are managing to pull themselves up as a country and started to develop their infrastructure,
technology, education and other sectors to ensure the comfortability of their citizens (Valencia et
al., 2010).
The burden of disease is affecting the Colombia healthcare policy and interventions
strategies. HIV/AIDS is prominent in the country with Colombia being the third in the number of
reported infections in the region. The number of the people under medication of the HIV/AIDS
stands at 21,000 while 54,000 individuals are yet to enroll for the treatment. The age that is most
affected by the infection is between 15 years and 46 years. HIV is the 3rd most expensive disease
in the country and lies in the 2nd position regarding cause of deaths in Colombia hence it has a
powerful influence on the state’s decisions on the health care policy. HIV/AIDS cases were first
discovered in the country in 1983 and had increased by an alarming over 600 times in a decade.
The regions of Medellin and Bogota in Colombia are the most affected as compared to the rest of
the country. An estimated 20 HIV/AIDS cases are discovered every day in the country (Calleja et
al., 2002).
The HIV/AIDS infected populations are 71% of the population while 23.6% of these
individuals have no idea that they have the disease. The HIV/AIDS society in the country has
largely depended on a right-to-health legal action approach in their history. Colombia’s practice
is exceptional, nevertheless, in the excellent level to which the country’s Legal Court replied to
the growing health lawsuits in 2008 by arranging for countrywide alterations to the healthcare
