“The Wife of Bath” by Chaucer
The wife of bath by Chaucer is a classic depiction of anti-feminism ideals where
women are portrayed as luxury loving and extravagant. In the Medieval Ages, feminism was
clearly portrayed as a negative social ideal. The male populace felt that the females had to be
their subjects. Women who fail to adhere to the ideal of the day would be defaced by the
society (Henry, 2000). For this reason, they always looked forward to be like men. To have
their own rights and privileges and be free from the rule of men.
On the other hand, antifeminism was the idea that women were the lot in the society
who had all the negative characters. More particularly, they were promiscuous in their
relationships, they loved luxury hence drained the men’s fortunes. They were loose tongued
as the Knight in ‘The Wife of Bath’ would find out (Greenblatt, 2012). On top of that,
antifeminism ideals painted women as being deceitful and pushing men beyond what they
felt they should have. The antifeminist sook to avoid the influence that women had but in the
end, that influence was definite. This is well seen in the Queens act of salvaging the Knight
