Introduction
So much weight has been attached to the study of ecology. This could be credited to various
issues including the evolving world where human beings, the environment and other living and
non-living organisms interrelate for their survival. Scientists, researchers, and learners are working
their way towards ensuring that they create a sustainable environment. This has, therefore,
necessitated the study of ecology. The knowledge on ecology is not only critical in understanding
how organisms interrelate with their environment but rather it is also important in ensuring that
the environmental, social and economic sustainability goals are achieved eventually (Zipf 36).
Various countries have also given the discipline of ecology and opportunity to grow by ensuring
that members of the society are sensitized on the need to maintain a sustainable ecological system.
The study of Ecology
As stated earlier, ecology is a discipline that not only involves the scientific
interrelationships between organisms and their environments but also involves identifying the
ways and pattern in which members of the society relate. Ecology is referred to as a discipline
because it involves the study of various relationships. A good example would be the commonly
used phrase that human beings are not islands. This basically means that they are incapable of
existing on their own and that they depend on other living and non-living creatures for their
survival. Different scholars have given different opinions on the ecology and the study of ecology.

What comes out clearly is that it is universally accepted that ecology is the study of the relationship
between different creatures and their surroundings.
The study of ecology has been embraced in various places including learning institutions
like elementary schools and colleges (Forman 6). This is where students are taught about the basic
principles of ecology and how they apply in the actual sense. Further, the study of ecology has
been adopted in institutions of higher learning and special research institutions. This goes to show
just how important the study of ecology is in society. There are various elements in ecology. These
elements include the organisms, the population, the communities as well as the ecosystem. The
relationship between these elements goes into enhancing the completeness of the ecosystem.
Population
Like it is with ecology, different people have defined what a population is. The standard
definition of a population, however, is the actual number of organisms especially from a similar
kind dwelling in a given geographical location. There are various characteristics of a population
including their ability to live together and to interbreed with the aim of increasing their population.
At the same time, the same time, there is a relationship of mutuality among members of the same
species. A good example of the population would be world's human population which is calculated
or estimated periodically depending on the prevailing circumstances.
The world's population is estimated to be 10 billion by the year 2016 (Forman 76). There
are various characteristics of a population that are explicit in the human population. Some of these
characteristics include the ...
