Part 1. Criminal Justice Research and Reputable Resources

For your main post, locate two reputable journal articles through the Capella University Library or Internet research and one nonreputable article on the Internet that focus on issues of a single general criminological or criminal justice issue, such as criminology or crime and delinquency. Then respond to the following:

1.Analyze the three articles selected, highlighting which articles should be considered reputable, and why.

2.Explain your understanding of science versus pseudoscience in the context of reputable research resources.

3.Discuss whether the articles you selected contain science or pseudoscience.

4.Determine what research methods are used in the selected articles, whether they are used by a criminal justice agency or scholar-practitioner, and why.

5.Discuss whether the articles selected are descriptive, evaluative, explanatory, or exploratory. Include in your discussion what characteristics make them so, and what makes the method used the best fit for the study over other research methods.

·Parts 2 The (Mis)measurement of Crime

Whether measurement of social phenomena is accurate can depend on the time and context of the data being measured. As societal views change, the meaning of the data can change with it. Therefore, it is important to select precise indicators when measuring abstract concepts, such as when trying to operationalize social phenomena. Before completing the discussion, view Crime Analyst in Action Introduction to meet a crime analyst who shares her career challenges and strategies and introduces the research process she uses in a recent assignment.

In your main post:

1.Explain the necessary factors to consider before public opinion survey results can be trusted as a reputable criminal justice resource, based on the principles of survey research examined in Chapter 1 of The Mismeasure of Crime.

2.Discuss how you could use public opinion research in your current or future career path based on its reliability as a resource.

3.Examine the benefits public opinion research would bring to your sector of interest in the criminal justice field versus other more or less reputable research resources.

Part 1: Criminal Justice Research and Reputable Resources
Analyze the three articles selected, highlighting which articles should be considered
reputable, and why.
Juvenile Crime, Aggression and Delinquency After Sexual Abuse: A Longitudinal Study
Heather Y. Swanston Patrick N. Parkinson Brian I. O'Toole Angela M. Plunkett Sandra
Shrimpton R. Kim Oates
This research attempted to investigate whether sexual abuse is related to future juvenile
offending, aggression and delinquency. The study group was composed of children with
validated sexual abuse cases submitted to hospitals in Sydney, Australia. Nine years after intake,
38 abused young people and 68 non-abused young people were interviewed and examined.
Parents were also included in the interviews. After modifying for sex, age, socio-economic state
and whether the child was staying with with biological parents at intake or not, a history of child
sexual abuse forecasted self-reported criminal behavior and parents' rating of the young person's
aggressiveness. This shows that child sexual abuse is an independent risk factor for offending
and delinquent behavior.
Civic Community and Juvenile Delinquency. A Study of the Regions of Italy
Uberto Gatti Richard E. Tremblay Denis Larocque
‘Civicness’ is explained as that property of the social fabric that is characterized by socio‐
political commitment, solidarity and mutual trust. From a social ecological point of view it is
presumed that civic traditions in a given geographical area will have an impact on criminality.
The goal of the current research was to examine the relation between level of civicness and level

of juvenile delinquency among the regions of Italy. The phrase ‘delinquency’ in this study
encompasses all illegal acts, from small misdemeanors to violent crimes. Regions with high
levels of civic commitment were hypothesized to be more successful in the socialization of its
youth, and would thus restrain its involvement in delinquent behavior. Results generally
supported the hypothesis. Significant negative correlations were observed at three different time
periods (in the 1970s, the 1980s, and in the 1990s) between civicness and official records of
robbery and attempted murder by minors, and murder committed by both minors and adults.
Data analyzation from a large victimization survey confirmed the significant negative
correlations between civicness and violent crimes, but also revealed a noteable negative
correlation between civicness and theft. Finally, analysis of socio‐economic predictors revealed
that they overlapped to a great extent with civicness, and thus signified that the prevalence of one
over the other could not be ascertained. It was concluded that the development of environments
in which socio‐political commitment, solidarity and mutual trust proliferate may facilitate the
social integration of children and curb the development of criminal behavior.
Comparative Study of Juvenile Delinquency in India, U.K. and U.S.A; The Role of
International Agencies in Juvenile Delinquency
This study concentrates on the juvenile delinquency problem which involves millions of youth,
and develops a classification scheme for theory; critically assessing present theories in the light
of delinquency research. It attempts to bring together, integrate, and make available in a text,
some of the excellent and often specialized work that has appeared in recent years in the disciple
called Juvenile Delinquency.

Juvenile Crime, Aggression and Delinquency After Sexual Abuse: A Longitudinal Study, and
Civic Community and Juvenile Delinquency. A Study of the Regions of Italy, are reputable
because they welcomes submissions from a variety of perspectives and use scientific research
Explain your understanding of science versus pseudoscience in the context of reputable
