Description

So for this week’s discussion board there are a few things I am hoping you will consider as you read through these brief readings, once again you may comment on all of these questions, some of these questions, or what interests you the most from the readings, but you have to write at least 500 words, provide me critical analysis, demonstrate you have done the readings, and write well (i.e., grammar, spelling, paragraph structure, etc.)

Both our authors this week discuss empathy as a human virtue and as a methodological tool for studying other people. What is the value in this methodology? Can it be fully accomplished? What might make Miles’ methodological use of empathy slightly easier than the empathy Smart discusses? How might the study of texts make empathy easier?

Both of our authors this week discuss the comparative method. What is different or similar in their respective methodologies? What pitfalls do Smart and Miles consider respectively? How might the study of texts make the comparative method easier? What cannot be considered by looking solely at texts?

Thinking back to what you read last week regarding some of the consistencies, inconsistencies, and definitional issues of religion, what attempts if any do our authors this week make to deal with such issues? Are they successful in their attempts? Why or why not?

No right or wrong answers, just some general impressions, but make sure you explain yourself to the fullest of your capabilities. Thank you and please email me immediately if you have any questions or concerns.

Empathy according to Miles is the ability to be able to identify and understand another
person’s feelings without having to experience them yourself at that particular moment. Empathy
is a virtue which every rational individual must have to ensure adequate relation with others in
any given environment. An intelligent individual must be able to empathize with others by
experiencing the world from another person’s perspective. In this case, to empathize with others
means being able to walk in another person’s shoes, to view life from their living conditions and
to feel what it feels like to be that person. Miles in his methodology states that humans should be
able to empathize with each other so as to be able to understand and learn about other people.
The value of empathy is greater within the human context, and in this case, people are
expected to empathize with others as this is the greatest virtue that Miles illustrates in his
methodology of empathy. According to Miles, individuals are supposed to develop empathy in
out of their motives as this is a virtue within any given humanity context. In this case, ones a
person is able to understand a person’s motives, it is by far easier to empathize with those
individuals. Smart, on the other hand, emphases on empathy by illustrating that one must be able
to empathize with others by trying to look at the phenomena through their eyes. Smart worked on
a structured empathy that emphasized on empathizing with others through experiencing the
world from the perspective of others.
In the particular methodologies of Smart and Miles, we can consider their approaches as
similar methods since they deem empathy as experiencing the world from the perspective of
other people. Miles consider his approach to empathy as one that stresses on empathy as a human
virtue that should be practiced by all the human generations. For Smart, empathy means
experiencing the feelings of others or entering imaginatively into others feeling and their beliefs,
in this case empathizing with other people means traveling in the minds of other people and
