MENTAL ILLNESS

Introduction
Mental illness is one of the stigmatizing illnesses and for quite sometimes, the mental
disorder was an illness no one would dare talk about as it viewed as a curse. The stigmatization
linked with the disorder was so strong that the patients who suffered mental illness were to be
separated from people and were to be left to die rather than getting treatment (Dieterich &
Marshall, 2010). Many people had a misconception that mental illness was as a result of poor
upbringing or a family curse. Even in the world today, many patients suffering mental disorders
are still discriminated. Mentally sick people are made to feel incapable, inadequate and different
from others. Even though we may not notice, mentally ill patients are being picked on and put
down or ridiculed (Fleury, 2012). I trust that each and every human being is created equal no
matter their outer appearance and the mentally ill patients are no different.
Mental illness is the condition that destabilizes the proper functioning of an individual’s
mind which in turn brings a situation of being stigmatized by the society due to the way the
media portrays people with such a condition (Furber, 2015). The pro side of this matter is that
the stigma could be reduced through educating the community on the condition of mental illness
to alter their negative perception of the condition. The con side of this matter is how the media
has facilitated the growth of the stigma on the issue of mental illness since it has continuously
blamed most of the violence incidences on mental instability. Mental illness is a concern that has
been a significant issue in families as well as societies since stigma isolates these individuals
making the families disregard seeking appropriate medical attention for their mentally ill
relatives (Walker & Druss, 2015). An example of mental illness becoming a significant issue is
whereby people tend to isolate the individuals with the condition as well as their families making

them neglect looking for healthcare attention with the concern that the public could denounce
them.
Literature Review
Mental illness has also been overlooked by most governments while in the process of
advancing healthcare which in turn reduces the chances of recovery due to the lack of sufficient
and advanced machinery capable of dealing with the condition. The specific controversy is present
when people blame most of the despicable actions on mental disorders making the individuals
suffering from the condition become isolated by their communities (Swanson, 2015). The specific
pro side of this issue is present where individuals are provided with the real information about
mental illness which changes their incorrect perceptions and becomes facilitators of reducing the
condition through seeking the appropriate medical attention for their patients (Fleury, 2012). The
specific con side of this matter is present when the media creates a violent perception of the
individuals with mental illness when they blame all the despicable acts of people to mental
disorders, therefore, becoming facilitators of stigmatization (Furber, 2015). The condition of
mental illness is supposed to be managed through seeking the appropriate me...
