Description
Write a proposal for a grant to fund a creative, intellectual or social project in your discipline. Imagine a foundation has a big chunk of money—you name the amount—it wants to give away to worthwhile projects in your discipline; this imaginary foundation will be the audience for your proposal, and you want to convince the foundation to support the project you’re inventing. Creative projects you could consider include things like novels or art pieces; intellectual projects you could consider include things like a museum exhibit, a computer database, or a team research project such as an archaeological dig; social projects you could consider might include some way to use the tools of your discipline to make an impact in a particular community, or to connect researchers in your field with each other or with communities outside of academia (see the wiki for some examples of such projects). You will need to do research to refine the focus of your project, to examine ways it fits into existing work or conversations in your discipline, and to identify books or articles that would help you carry out the project. Your proposal will not only need to describe the project, but also make the case that it is worth the imaginary foundation’s money: why should they be excited about this? What’s the fundamental problem or issue or question you hope to address, explore, or do something about?
