Introduction
Communication entails the process through which information is transmitted from the
source to a receiver via a specific medium. Communication can be divided into two
categories; verbal and non-verbal communication
The types, components, and functions of both verbal and nonverbal communication
Andrea Rocci, (2006) states that verbal communication can be defined as the means
of sharing information and ideas between two or more people/parties with the aid of speech.
This form of communication involves the use different languages to enable communication
between two communicating agents. Written communication is also deemed to be verbal
since it involves the use of words for communication. Types of verbal communication
include; speaking face-to-face, speaking on the phone, writing a letter, giving a lecture,
making announcements, video chat services, and leaving a voice mail, among others. Verbal
communication has various components which include sound, speech, language, and
conversations. This form of communication enables individuals to interact with one another,
keeping each other informed, expressing one's feelings creatively, sharing emotions and it
also helps in asking for support and help.
Non-verbal communication is the use of visual cues to transfer information from one
person to another in a non-linguistic manner. These visual cues include body language,
gestures, facial expression, haptic communication, eye contact and chronemic
