Fulfilling psychological needs
Hierarchy of needs, as posited by Abraham Maslow, is a representation of the precedence
of human needs. The needs are presented in a pyramid with five tiers. The five tiers are further
sub-divided into basic needs, psychological needs and self-fulfillment needs. Under
psychological needs, there are two needs that human beings are constantly seeking to fulfill;
esteem needs and the need for love, or belongingness. Previously, I have purchased a number of
items in an attempt to fulfill psychological needs.
When I joined school, at a tender age, I always wanted to standout from everyone else. I
would get my parents to buy me the fanciest clothes. Apart from clothes, I also made sure that I
also had the fanciest backpack for my books. This gave me a lot of self-esteem. Often, I
overheard my classmates while in second grade talking about my backpack. I liked the way they
viewed me. I was more confident when talking to them back then.
Looking back, it did not matter a lot back then. When I joined college, everything
mattered. From what I ate, what I wore, what I used, and who I hang out with among other
things. In my initial days, I was using a simple phone. My mates in college were using
sophisticated smartphones. In this era of technology, one of the things that matter a lot to college
students is the sophistication of one’s smartphone. I did not have this in mind initially. As a
